DAP is synthetically produced dog appeasing hormone. A couple of days after a bitch has whelped she exudes this pheromone which has a calmiong effect on the pups making them feel calm and safe. It is a survival mechanism to keep pups in the den quiet and unlikely to wander. The theory is that by having a collar or room diffuser which exudes this pheromone it helps to settle a dog without the sedating effect of other medication. We are trying it at the moment to try and calm down one of our lurchers, it hasnt done much for him but the pups are a lot calmer (w00t) . So I think its a suck it and see if it works for you sort of thing.

Heya Kat & Lorna!

Not sure if this will be any help but it's food for thought .........

It is human instinct to comfort and cuddle our children (and I am including whippets in this ;) ) if they are scared or insecure in any way. This is great if you're a human but, for a dog, the affection and cuddles come across as a reward for doing the shaking and being frightened

Therefore, the more we try to console them with affection, the more they will get the idea that it is a good thing to shake and take on about things because it brings reward from their pack leader .... you!!! The best thing to do is ignore her fear and continue onwards in a firm but reassuring manner to help instill confidence in her.

Jinny is scared of the car and shakes uncontrollably when I put her in it. I am in the process of trying to train myself to ignore this and just get on with stuff in the hope that she will grow out of it

Dunno if this will help at all ....... really hope so 'cos it's horrid to see them scared :(

Good luck :luck: :luck: - let us know what happens!! :D

PS There's strength in numbers......are you still thinking of getting another one to keep Pheobe company??

I've tried a Dap collar for fireworks and it was brilliant but had to combine if with Skullcap and Valerian tablets for bonfire night itself.

I also wonder if it is worth taking the bull by the horns and taking her to a class for socialisation. I would imagine that she is also picking up on your worry/concern and this could be making her worse. I feel that you should be making her face her fear. That way it can be sorted rather than become a bigger issue.

Try the dap spray in her bedding. I have been using this for Diesel. He is quite happy in the car now and I have only had to use the spray a few times.

:luck: :luck: with the speying (and don't expect Phoebe to get over the general anaesthetic too quickly - Jinny took ages when she had her dew claw op and was a real spaced out zombie for 24 hours after :( )
