DESTINY
Destiny is a 2 year old ex-racing greyhound girl. She is a dainty girl with a very long, elegantly shaped nose that gives her a very regal appearance. Once her coat improves and gets some shine to it, she’s going to be just beautiful.
~ Personality ~
Destiny is a friendly little girl with a waggy tail for everyone who comes and visits her. She enjoys people and is going to relish the home life so much. Destiny has just come to us so we are still assessing her. She will soon be placed in a foster home which will allow us to get a much better idea of her wonderful little personality.
~ Other Animals ~
Destiny has so far been well behaved with all the other dogs she has met, regardless of size or gender. She is a playful little girl and we’re sure there’s a cheeky streak hidden in there somewhere! Destiny would do well in a home with another similarly aged dog to keep her company and drain any excess energy. She has not been tested with cats yet but we will be doing this shortly.
~ In the Home ~
Little Destiny has just moved in to a foster home now, and we will be updating with her progress once she has a bit of time to adjust to the changes – this is her first time in a home. New owners will need to be a bit patient during the first couple of weeks and allow her time to settle into the home. It generally takes 10-14 days for new greyhounds to start to settle down in a home, and really all they need is a bit of time and patience.
~ Out and About ~
Destiny loves being out and about, and enjoys her walks. Like most greyhounds, Destiny will not need a huge amount of exercise. She will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch her legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week.
~ Greyhounds as Pets ~
In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly. Greyhounds also don’t shed as much as other more popular dog breeds and this can make them suitable to live with allergy sufferers.
**UPDATE: JUNE 2011**
The delicious destiny has been in her foster home for about 2 months now, and is doing very well for herself. She is ready and waiting for the right family to come along for her, and with a small bit of work she is sure to be a fab little girl.
~ Personality ~
Destiny has shown herself to be a beautifully friendly and affectionate hound. She loves people and loves getting a fuss. She is always happy to meet someone new, though if allowed to get too excited she can become a bit bouncy. She is a young girl, full of exuberance and it is obvious she is extremely happy with her new life as a loved pet. Destiny is an intelligent girl with a happy, cheery nature – she is guaranteed to keep you happy and laughing at her antics.
~ In the Home ~
Destiny has settled nicely in to her foster home, and is well behaved. She is housetrained, not destructive and sleeps soundly through the night. She is a bit of a food hog and will steal from the counter if given half the chance, but her fosterer has worked with her on this and she has shown much improvement. Likely she will try to counter surf once or twice in her new home and should cease when told a firm no. She is getting the grasp of basic commands, and as she is such a foodie, is very likely to listen well if you have a bit of tasty sausage in your hand! Destiny really is a lovely little character, and has the greyhoundy habit of pinching random household objects to collect in her bed. Destiny is partial to shoes and sofa cushions. She never chews these items, just likes to collect and admire them like a magpie would a shiny coin!
~ Other Animals ~
Destiny is a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to other dogs. Generally she is good with them, but can get excited and ‘keen’ if she sees a small dog moving in the distance or talking towards her on walks. If the small dog is up close and not moving, Destiny is polite and happy to meet, its just when she sees the movement in the distance that her racing instincts kick in and she can get a bit confused. This is a fairly common issue amongst hounds not long off the racetrack, and has great potential to dissipate with time and lots of repetition in socialising her with smaller dogs. Destiny is great with other dogs of a similar size to her own, and gets on beautifully with the other greyhound in her foster home. She has learned a lot about living in a home from her greyhound friend, and they have now started playing together in the garden.
~ Out and About ~
Destiny walks well on the lead in general, though can become excited and reactive if she sees moving objects. This includes balls, birds, cats and small dogs. When she gets excited in this way, she does pull on the lead and will try to chase the moving object. Again this is a relatively common problem in recently retired hounds, and Destiny should start showing improvement as she learns to calm down and chill out over the next few months. New owners will need to be aware that she does need some work in this area, but that with lots of positive repetition and exposing her to as many situations as possible, she will soon learn to be a calmer, more centered dog. She just needs that chance to show how good she can be.
Destiny would be best suited to an active home who will bring her on lots of walks as she really does love seeing the world. She will need someone who will be dedicated in providing her with that gentle guidance and repetition she needs to get over her excitability upon seeing anything moving, and once these rough edges are smoothed over, Destiny will be that perfect model greyhound. This girl has oodles of love to give and just needs that chance to prove herself.
