My male greyhound needs his dew claws cutting & i hate using nail cutters , i am really paranoid about not doing it right , i have what i thought were good cutters but there nails are very thick .

Apart from taking him to the vets to get them done is there another way i could tackle them, i had thought of filing then back a little bit each day to just get them down a bit

Do other people do there own dogs or let a groomer or vet do them ?

I'd usually get mine done at the vet but if his nails are very long, I don't think you'd have to worry so much about cutting the quick as it will usually be nearer to the start of the nerve where the nails start. Use a scissor-type cutter for the dew claw and cut at a right angle to the toenail. The claws on the rear feet are often shorter and require less frequent trimming than those on the front feet. Light colored claws are easier to cut than dark claws as the quick that supplies the toenail is easier to see. Cut the toenail to within approximately 2 millimetres of the quick.
