hi all,

im new to this site , i have a 11 year old jack russell called maddy, she was diagnosed diabetic last week she is on insulin 2 times a day , all seems to be going ok, shes seems to have a new lease of life, which has made me so happy, but im now worried about cataracts , she seems ok at the minute but im really worried that she will develope these because of the diabetes,

has anyone else had similar happen to their dog ??

just looking for a friendly ear really im so overwhelmed at the minute with whats happenend to my little baby im still in shock

any help would be great

I can't help you with diabetes advice as I have never had a pet suffer with it but I do understand about the shock - my Siamese cat Star was diagnose with Kidney Failure this year and is on a special diet and that was a complete and horrible shock.

She, as with your Maddy, is okay now she is on the food but she spent the first few days of diagnosis on a drip in the vets and it was touch and go.

I can't help with dog diabetes, but my 15 yr old cat, Bobby, is diabetic and has been for about 4 or 5 years. I felt awful at the start and HATED injecting twice a day (I had before having kids been phobic about needles, so this was stretching me quite a bit). However, Bobby is absolutely fine now, he just has the jabs while eating and hardly even twitches.

Keep getting your dog checked regularly as sometimes (even after they think they have the insulin levels right), things can change over time. Keep monitoring that he isn't drinking more or being more or less active than usual. If your vet suggests that your dog needs to lose weight etc, then go with that and be careful with scavenging. But otherwise, diabetes is a very scary sounding, but actually quite easy to deal with for animals, disease.

Now you know what is wrong with your dog you can get him back on the path to wellness. It will take a few weeks for his sugar levels, etc to even out and for you to get used to it, but it gets better from now on.

thanks guys, im also having trouble with getting to her to have enough food in the morning, she doesnt eat enough then shes scavenging in the afternoon, yesterday we went for a walk and she picked food up of the floor and ate it too slow to stop her .

If your vet says it's okay, could you try moving her morning meal to later?

I have a problem with my beagle hoovering up food on walks, particularly near chip shops at tea time, but a Halti head collar is a fantastic cure for that. A friend resorted to a Baskerville muzzle to prevent scrounging when out. Just don't use a fabric muzzle as panting properly isn't possible whilst wearing one
