just after advice regarding speying my lurcher bitch before her first season. my vet thinks it is a must. but i am a little unsure. should i let her have a season first.

any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi Iware

you will find your answers in F.A.Q

I haven't had time to read FAQ on this subject, but when I did rescue, our vets would not neuter a bitch until after her first season. The rescue had been going for over 20 years and there was some evidence of bitches from the early days (when they were done before a first season) developing incontinance problems amongst others, personally I would always wait until after. Our vets said it was a much easier op for both them and the dog if the bitch had already had a season as they had fully matured and it was easier to "find the bits they needed!!"

dont spay her, please! at least allow her the one season. this helps to mature the animal mentally....my advice? get 'the book of the bitch', it costs around £10, and is worth its weight in gold! :luck:

Good pointer - neutering is a hugely contentious subject as you'll see from the long and heated debates you'll find in FAQ  It's a must-read! Lesley's given you the link so have fun reading

:p no,sadly..but, it does contain excellent information on the raising and maintaining of your bitch, from puppyhood to old age, common ailments, symptoms for more serious concerns. this is the bible of many dog fanciers. of course the spaying is entirely up to you, but as any animal lover will tell you, its your responsibility to make sure its an informed decision. hope everything goes well :luck:

hello, we've just had our bitch spayed 5 months AFTER her first season. This was on the advice of our vet and the RSPCA who said you should always wait until after the first season. Apparently, this can reduce the risk of cancers later in life. This advice was backed up by an article I read by a vet in a pet magazine. good luck anyway

Just to say i agree with you totally. I would NEVER spay a bitch before her first season, this is just my personal opinion but i dont beleive a bitch ever has chance to mature fully if not allowed her first season. To me its along the same lines as making a little girl have a hysterectomy before she even reached puberty.

Most vets will push for you to do it as young as possible as its all money in their pockets.

I thankfully have a brilliant one of the old time vets now & he would never suggest spaying before a first season.

Many years ago (25yrs i hate to say!), i had my first rescue lurcher from Battersea dogs home. I took her to a vet & he suggested spaying her at 6 months old before her first season. Being naive then & she was my first ever dog i stupidly agreed.

Looking back now i realise she was the only bitch i ever had who never matured properly both physically & mentally.

Obviously i think each & every owner should do what they feel is best after all its their dog.

So just hope this helps in some way & whatever anyone does i wish them luck. Nina

I've just gone online to try and obtain a copy of the book you recommend, but can't find it - do you have the name of the publisher? thanks, Linda :)

New edition BOOK OF THE BITCH by J.M.Evans & Kay White,

INTERPET PUBLISHING

Vincent Lane

Dorking, Surrey,

RH4 3YX

i bought my copy at PETS AT HOME if it helps, and it cost £9.95

oh, yeah. they also do a BOOK OF THE DOG

Good recommendation!

However, I found it really difficult to get hold of a new copy :( but I got one secondhand and it's brilliant.

Some secondhand copies are available here - just watch out you don't get stung with P&P on top

if i didnt have this book, my litter would have been born by c section. as it was, i stopped my scalpel happy vet by insisting he try oxytocin injections. without this book, i wouldve gone along with him and his advice, and though money isnt more important than my girl, ended up nearly £900 poorer  which is what he told me the proceedure would cost, never mind the (pointless) trauma amber wouldve gone through entirely on his say so.

I don't know much about this subject, but I have noted that most recent publications are saying that spaying BEFORE the first season reduces the risk of breast cancer in later years

(and in unspayed bitches, nursing a litter is somewhat protective also)
