Last week our small dog was attacked by a large dog running loose that had escaped its garden. He had severe puncture wounds which were looked at and cleaned by vet and given medications but gradually became worse over next few days. Yesterday he was rushed for surgery due to his abdomen being full of pus/ infection and has been discharged with large open wounds and 2 drains in his stomach.

My question is we have reported this to the dog warden and local police and are now awaiting a visit from them. What can I expect to happen next? The owners of the other dog have offered to pay vets bills which are rising daily but I am curious if action will be taken against the owners. The dog has escaped previously and I suppose all i want is to know that this is not going to be allowed to happen again. Our dog is like a child to us and this has been such a traumatic experience for our whole family especially our young daughter.

Thank you

So sorry to hear of your terrible experience.

When aggression is reported between two dogs it is very rare for any action to be taken against anyone. The best, I think, that you can hope for is that the Dog Warden will give them a stern talking to about responsible dog ownership. He should visit the home and give advice on how to contain the dog. The police usually do not want to know about dog on dog attacks.

I hope your little dog is recovering from the physical injuries. You might like to enquire about getting behavioural help and see if you could claim the expense from the other dog's owners too? Your little dog will have been traumatised by the event and will need help to overcome his fear.

As much as I hate offlead dogs that do attack and hurt it's good that the owner of the dog has offered to pay vet bills,,, was your dog on or offlead??? If off then it's hard to get any action apart from telling them to be more careful, if your dog was on lead then it does go up a gear or two, up here in Scotland they get a warning then two more and it's the possibility of losing your dog in certain cases,,, may I ask what action your looking for?????

Thank you for your replies. Our dog was on his short lead at the time and the dog was loose on a public pavement. The only way to get the other dog off him was to pull him round and up by his lead/ harness.

The action I would want is for the owners to be cautioned and this to be on record. This dog is large and has attacked ours and I don't want this to happen again to another animal or worse a child.

I think they will or defo should get a warning, hope all gets sorted.
