Hi all I would like some advice from current dog boarders. I'm looking to start a business in dog care and boarding and know I need to obtain a license to do so.

I want it to be a very custom type, I live on a small holding with fields and plenty of room for them to run around but the dogs will stay inside with me.

When taking in dogs what sort of things do you ask? Do you get them to sign a disclaimer? If any accidents should happen do you take them to the owners vet or your vet? How do you cover the expenses of this? I would obviously have a licence and insurance but just want some advice to make sure is all 100% covered and legit.

Many thanks

I did home boarding many years ago when my daughter was small. Like you, I live on a smallholding. No licence necessary then. It is very, very popular. I gave up about 25 years ago and still get asked! I don't know anything about the regulations now though. I only took one family's pets at once. Sometimes this was one dog, sometimes two but on one notable occasion it included one dog (aggressive), one cat (ripped up my spare bedroom) and two milking nanny goats (had no manners and were a nightmare to milk!) all from the same family. They went on my list of "Sorry I Am Full" people.

If I could find someone to home board my dog I would prefer them to use my own vet where possible. You could draw up any sort of contract that you like. I would expect to pay any vet expenses unless there was negligence on the part of the kennels (a kennels once allowed my dog to jump through a plate glass window and tried to charge me for the window and the vet fees!).

A friend in my village looked into doing home boarding recently and found getting a licence too onerous in the end. I think it works if you are home all the time for other reasons such as child care.
