I seem to have far more assorted dogs medicines and first aid supplies than I have human stuff, but must admit to not being very well organised. I have various items in various cupboards and drawers, so one of my tasks for the Easter break is to put everything together into a proper dog first aid kit and add any other useful bits I might need.

I just wondered what canine first aid supplies other people keep, and what are your essential 'must haves'?

I am totally disorganised and the animal and human first aid supplies have something of an 'overlap'. I have various sterile dressings, Hibiscrub, sterile saline sachets, odd human bandages, vetwrap. steri-strips, gamgee, Betadine, Lavender Oil, Arnica Ointment... digs around in the bag to see what else is there......

I need to get my first aid kit sorted - this could be a very useful thread!!

My first aid kit crosses over between horses and dogs, but the dogs generally have ........

Vetwrap

Cotton wool

Dressings (especially melolin)

Saline solution

Blue spray

Intrasite gel

Wound powder

Scissors

Animalintex

Meloxicam (prescription only)

Small bottle of pre-boiled sterile water

"dry ice" pack for strains etc

Sure there's some other stuff but can't remember at the mo

We have:

vet wrap, cotton wool, woven under bandages, tick hooks, sterile wipes, wound powder, scissors, nail clippers, hibiscrub, cold pack, purple spray, non stick dressings, tweezers, saline solution, lavender oil, DAP, rescue remedy, arnica, rehydration sachets, rimadyl and antihistamine.

Plus Tiny's prescription meds and his antacid etc.

I think that's more or less it.

OOOPS! Sounds like others are more organised than me! I'd forgotten to include some of the 'horsey' stuff (my kids are SO neglected lol!!), Cut and Heal spray. animalintex etc, oh and Magnesium Sulphate, I always have the powder which is great as a whitener for the showring - MEGA White socks!! BUT, mixed as a paste with sterile water is really good as a 'drawing' agent, abcesses etc.

I had the same problem recently with trying to 'organise' my dog medicaments - I have found that a cheap plastic toolbox, with a see-through lid, handle and plastic tray inside is a great way of organising stuff. When I go away, I can just bung it all in the car easily. Its probably easier for me with only one dog - I could see that if you have a gang it might get quite complicated!

The toolbox is a great idea, I've been trying to think what would be a suitable container to keep everything together

There are several places you can buy things like wound powder and other veterinary supplies online, I use Vet UK

(and if you use the link from the Oldies Club site here http://www.oldies.org.uk/?page_id=534 to place an order we get a small percentage :- )
