Hi everyone,

Im new on here. Basically I rescued a Pomeranian about 6 years ago, he didnt have a great start at all in his life. He was fed the worst food imaginable, he was beaten and his teeth were so bad when we got him. We eventually had to get all his teeth removed due the fact we couldn't help him at all. No matter how we tried to clean them and feed him better food. I do not even know his age but I reckon he is a senior dog now due to the grey muzzle, terrible teeth, hair loss etc

For the past while he has been losing hair, it started on his hind legs, his skin is dry and a dark black grey colour there. Then I noticed the hair at his neck disappearing too, his skin on his neck is normal colour. Now he is losing his hair at his sides and the base of his tail. The vet reckons it could be cushings disease or hormonal. But one thing that wasnt considered was Black Skin Disease which is very common in Pomeranians. It could well be Cushings but this could be a possibility too. The vet recently put him on heart tablets as he has an irregular heartbeat. But we are afraid that his heart might not be able to go through the sedation to get blood tests to check for these things.

I bought a product called Dermagic Rescue Lotion, they claim that it may help a dog with hair loss. Especially Poms. Has anyone heard of this or used it, or recommend something that can either help his hair to grow back or stop the hair loss process from getting worse.

I love my dog with all my heart, he is truly my best friend. It pains me to think he had all that to go through and now his hair is going. He isnt itchy or irritated, hes not red, the skin just seems dry, the hair is like a cotton wool effect. The vet is aware of his hair loss. I just feel helpless.

Has anyone had similar situations and or heard of Black Skin Disease/ Alopecia X in dogs?

I would appreciate your help.

Thanks :)

No amount of topical application is going to help your dog if he has Cushings or any other systemic disease. He needs treatment from the inside. All you can do is to keep him warm. Would he wear a coat?

This make me sad. I'm sorry I can't offer any help at all (new dog owner and don't know what I'm doing half the time, but the helpful souls on here are great). I really hope you get a good result for your dog, please let me know how things go on.
