I just wanted to know what you do when a random dog tries to hump yours on the beach? I've been dog sitting this weekend. Girl dogs both been spayed. One boy dog all of sudden started humping one of them. While I struggled to get him off her. Both quite big dogs. The owner of the boy dog just stood there and did nothing. She was almost laughing when she came over and finally dragged him away. She knew that he had been spayed as well and I guess didnt see the problem with it. I am a bit annoyed. It may sound silly but I feel like she has been violated. She's not even my dog and I feel guilty. It only lasted a second before I managed to pull him away. I just wondered what your opinion is on it? If your dog has been spayed do you just let them carry on? Or do you stop it?

Humping is not always about sex. Some dogs will do it to show who is top dog. Others just get a bit excited and do not know what else to do! Very annoying that the other owner did not intervene and control her dog. Your dog is probably much less upset about he whole thing than you are though

It is very bad manners for a dog to come and mount the one you were walking, and even more so for the owner to do nothing about it. Victoria Stillwell has a very good article about this sort of behaviour-

Anybody know why my spayed 10mnth old female dog does it with towels, cushions, etc?

Thank you all. Has made me feel a bit better. I guess it's something I need to deal with being a dog sitter. And I guess dog humping is a bit different to human sex. Not as many emotions or feeling involved I'm guessing

I had a male dog try it on with my male dog some time ago. Luckily his owner called him off just as he started! It could've been a nasty situation though as he was swamped with dogs a the time and tends to bark at them, but didn;t this time around.

My dog stopped doing this as a puppy, but he does it occasionally, as gypsymum says, to get negative attention - great way for a dog to stop whatever your doing and make you run over to them immediately making a big scene!

Thanks. Interestingly she tends to do it when she's already getting attention. For example: when we come back from a walk she is very good and stands still while I hose her down and co-operates while I dry her off with towels, standing still and lifting each paw.. It's when we've finished and I say ok is when she gets very excited and grabs the towels and tries to hump them. I just take them away and she calms down. Just wondered what this might mean as doesn't seem an attention getting behaviour.

Sounds like over excitement. She is feeling highly stimulated and does not know what else to do so humps the towels?

Ah, thanks Gypsysmum, that makes sense, cos she also sometimes does it if I get my coat and walk past her with it she will sometimes try to jump on it. Again when she is excited at the thought of going out. Not a big problem really, as she does it less and less and is easy to stop. But nice to have some understanding why.
