Hi all I have a question about dog insurance, is it worth while getting it? If so can anyone recommend me a pet insurance company to use? I have had a good look online and found Healthy pet’s to be pretty cheap. Does anyone use them? I can’t afford to spend a silly amount on dog insurance as I have enough outgoings as it is. Here is their website let me know what you think http://www.healthy-pets.co.uk/index.numo

Thanks x

I use Argos Platinum for my dogs.

Very reasonable (around £10 to £12 per month starting from puppy age) and covers every eventuality, even long term illness - and they pay out without question too

I have both of mine with healthy pets, I have luckily never had to claim from them so cant personally vouch for them paying up, I'm sure there are people on here who have claimed from them with no trouble at all (or it could be the other forum) I do know I have never read anything bad about them

I too found Argos to be one of the cheapest and Silver cover was around £8 per month.

I too am with Argos and have only needed to claim once, but they paid up within about 3 days. I've no complaints about them!

Thats good to know. I have just done a quick check and Healthy pets is slightly cheaper pet insurance for the cover they offer still there is not a lot in it! Any other good experiences?

Argos platinum for me too.....only been with them for 3 months and just had to claim £400......paid no problem.

I've had Rifle insured with Healthy Pets for almost 5 years. Had several claims recently (I have the highest level of cover btw). Requested Claim Form online and it arrived 1st Class the next day. The claims were for an ongoing condition and they have paid out promptly each time a claim form was submitted. They were extremely helpful when I spoke to them on the phone too. They also covered Acupuncture (carried out by my Vet) which some Insurance Companies can be a bit funny about, or so I've been told. Absolutely no complaints from me! Good luck :luck:

My two are with More Than, just over 12 quid a month each. Had to claim once when Grover had a cyst removed and tested and they paid up no problems. As a word of caution, a friend of mine recently decided he couldn't afford insurance and was going to pay money into an account instead to cover vets bills. Within the space of two weeks one of his greyhounds was attacked by another dog and needed surgery plus ongoing dressing changes and the other ran off and broke her leg very awkwardly needing pins and plates and lots of ongoing treatment. He has had to find thousands of pounds and it really made me stick with insurance!

I really dont understand this insurance business.

You all seem to find really low quotes and I cant find any under £20 month for a 5yr old lurcher!!!

I've only had 2 claims in 5yrs so its not like he is sickly or anything, tried all the comparison sites and theyre nearly all the same price range...what am I doing wrong here?

Argos Platinum too , paid £1,800.00 for Buffee only 5 months into contract, no problems

Some prices are done on Post Code Morganna ( please dont take offense ) :teehee:

OH Jackie, cheers for that thought!!!good job I don't live in a really rough area  Its bad enough owning a couple of lurchers...those undesirable curs owned by shady people (w00t) so say the insuruers by that way of thinking.Wouldn't mind if the dog in question hadnt been sadly rather dealt a bad blow when racing and cant even run any more...not that the vet found that so no claim there.Rob Meek sorted that out privately.

Anyway it does mean perhaps I should move and Cornwall beckons!!! ;)

Thats really good they don't list acupuncture treatment in their policy benefits page. See http://www.healthy-pets.co.uk/content/cont...a=1&idas=38

I have had dog insurance with healthy pets for quite a while now and have been very pleased with the service. Had to claim for treatment a few times and each one was sorted quickly.

Yeah insurance is a strange thing. I spent AGES looking for good dog insurance and found that the cost is mainly based on breed, age and post code. I also found out that unlike other insurances it does not matter if you have made a claim or not and that no insurer will take on pre conditions. :(

Hope that helps. How old is your dog rtaylor?

I would very strongly recommend insurance - Alfie broke his leg at just 6 months old and the total cost came to more than £2000 - thank goodness for insurance :sweating:

I know of a few people who pay into a monthly 'dog fund' to pay for any unforseen veterinary bills which may arise. What in my opinion they arn't considering though is the 3rd liability section attatched to most insurance policies. When my dog did a runner earlier in the year, I was extremely lucky that she came home unscathed dispite dodging a very busy road. However, had the unthinkable happened and an accident had occured should anyone have claimed against me, it would have been an awfully big dog fund to provide me with the £1M cover that my insurance company does.

I recently cancelled the dogs expensive policies that were costing £28 per whippet per month, and put a few £k in a savings account to cover vets bills ... but we are in the process of taking out cheaper policies for them all to cover in the event of expensive injury  Finn knocked me flying last week and I've torn all the ligaments in my ankle ... I dread to think what the bills would have been by now if it was Finn's leg that had sustained the injury

Insurance policies may suit some, they're not suitable for our dogs as they are racers. Additionally I have issues with the fact some vets treatment plans and pricing will be completely different depending upon whether the dog is insured or not.

Dogs trust offer third party liability insurance with their membership and I prefer my money invested with them.

We have 21 dogs in total. They have their own savings account and expenditure with the advantage being that the money can be used for anything from vaccinations to extensive specialist treatment in specialist veterinary hospitals. If your commited and diligent about your savings, a four figure sum is simply not an issue.

Poppy is 3 and a half :)

I did wonder if previous claims effected the price so thanks for that snippet of info. I received a pet insurance quote from Pet plan the other day which seemed like good cover but the cost was like double the one I got from healthy pets. I also looked at MT but thought their excess looked funny. Seems that pet insurance is a must from what people are saying. Do I need all of these benefits though? http://www.healthy-pets.co.uk/content/cont...a=1&idas=38

For £15 a month (OK, I only have the one dog to insure, but he's 5 now and I've had quite a few claims!) I think paying for the Gold cover is worth the premium (I can see why those with multiple dogs would disagree) They now, will pay out for 'lifetime cover' for his existing condition and don't, like many other well known insurers, ask for a percentage of the claim to be paid by the client. I've got the peace of mind that next year, despite my claims, they will continue to offer cover..
