In all my years of owning dogs I had never lost one or had one go missing. My worst nightmare happened last Tuesday (Aug 18). Our old ride on mower backfired and scared one of my whippet pups. She shot over a near 6 foot high fence and was off like a rocket. We have had 2 escape artists here and they had never been able to navigate our fences but this one certainly did.

We looked for her all afternoon and night and she was no where in sight. Alerted the local vets, the pound, the microchip records in case she gets picked up by someone else and most of the people we know in Lara had their eyes peeled. We knew she would be difficult for other people to catch as she is quite the snob around strangers.

Wednesday nothing, Thursday nothing. So I put an add in the local paper for Saturday. Had a couple of false leads. Got a call this morning and lady saw her running around the streets behind the footy oval. She said she couldn't catch her. I jumped into the car with a passenger in tow to. 2 streets down from the footy oval we saw a small pale flash go into someones drives way. If I was looking for other way I would have missed it. I jumped out and took Nancys mother (sonnet) to the drive and called her. She galloped straight to us. Nearly knocked me for a six. She was just so excited to see us.

Here she is when we got her back. Still excited to see her mother.

The picture doesn't really show it but she is quite emaciated. I guess living off some dead things and not really eating for 5 days. The nights had been cold as well. She had a few scrapes over her legs but overall she is quite well. We are so lucky she didn't get hit by a car. We all know what whippets are like on the roads.

I can't express my relief at this time.

OMG!!! What a self sufficient little whippet!! Thank god she was ok and if you ever have the misfortune of something like that ever happening again, (not that you will as I am guessing that you've made the place even more bulletproof than what it was before!) let me know so i can help with the searching.

Kissess and hugs Nancy for being a very lucky whippet

Thanks for the best wishes everyone

She looks so thin and stresses big time when I leave the house. She will take a bit to recover mentally I think. All she did yesterday afternoon was sleep sleep and sleep some more. Bit more chipper today though so that's good.

Ironically her registered name is "Ondeen The White Mouse" and just like her name sake our Nancy eluded capture and dodged perils over the 5 days that she was missing.

Thank goodness she is home safe :))

I totally know the sick feeling of a missing dog, my very first ever whippet went walkabout and was never found, absolutely gut wrenching :(

Someone upstairs is looking out for Nancy, that was a lucky find - I'm sure she'll be feasting on some tasty treats for the next little bit ;)

Thank God she was spotted! I'd be giving the lady who called you the flowers, champagne AND chocolates. :D

She's both a lucky AND a pretty girl.

Good to hear some good news stories, it is always horrible to have the sinking feeling of not knowing what has happened to one of your babies. Its good she didn't wander too far (without knowing the distance) I bet she is glad tobe at home in the warmthafter spending a few chilly nights outside. Hope all goes well in her future :)

    Update

Nancy is doing much better this week. Has put on weight but not sure if she'll have enough condition for our local specialty so we'll play it by ear.

Have pretty much created a rod for my back, she thinks being inside the house "full time" is the best thing ever and carries on a treat when I put in the back shed with the others at night. Suffice to say the other "full time" house whippet, Sonnet, has her nose bent out of shape....Swear to god they are worse than kids!!!.
