Can anyone recommend any dog trainers in the South Warwickshire area? I have a rather hyper Large Munsterlander, a very independent Beagle and my gorgeous whippet. I am hoping to find someone that I can take them to to help me have a little more control out walking and leaving them in the car without them barking the place down!!! They are not awfully behaved, but I feel that if I can get them more reliable, then my hubby might let me have a second whippet!!!! See there is always method in the madness hee hee

I am starting to have a little problem that may become bigger with the whippet, he is getting a little bit too big for his boots with other dogs. I am in the predicament of having to get him back on a lead if I see another dog as he will run up to them and snap and growl at them - he does not actually attack them, but he is quite vocal. I guess he is guarding his pack, i.e us!! But I know I am only going to make the problem worse by continuing to put him back on his lead.

If anyone can recommend anyone, I would be really grateful. I am not after someone to make them do tricks, just better and more reliable behaviour.

Thanks

Check out this website;

They have have a list on there where you can find approved trainers in your area. Good luck.

:luck:

are you sure it's the dogs that need training??

Yes you are doing the right thing in asking ......I can't help you with any trainers up your way, but if you want to email me with specific training problems i'll try to help you ..... :luck: Hannah :)

No its probably me that needs the training, thats why I am trying to seek assistance.  What would you do?

I'd do exactly what you are doing, and find someone to help me :thumbsup:

Trainers generally don't train dogs, they train owners by showing them ways to work with their dogs and suggesting ways of overcoming problems. Training the dog comes afterwards when you have to go away and put it into practice.

Good luck finding someone, and well done for stepping in to correct problems before they become major issues :luck:

Thanks everyone for the positive responses. I am grateful for any help and advise, as this is the only way we get better at living with dogs. On the whole I manage to be the leader of the pack, but now and again when temptation is too great and fun, I seem to drop down the order a couple of rungs!!!! As I said before, my dogs are not complete tyrants, or nasty in any way, just a little exuberant at times which can be unpleasant for non doggy people when I am out and about with them.

I did have a lady help me about a year ago, before I had the whippet, with clicker training, but unfortunately the mad Munsterlander became so excitable about the training, that everytime I picked up the clicker, he got beside himself :teehee: He is very loveable, but sooooo highly strung. In the end I must admit I had to give up as all he would do was sit and bark at me until I put the clicker away again. I hasten to add, I did persevere with this method of training for about a year :blink:

Thanks again everyone xx

I'd just like to reply (having sifted through as much as I could manage from your website!) That Jan Fennel's methods worked very well for Digit. I'm not naive enough to think that one method will suit any dog with any problem - but what I do know is that I have gone from having a dog who was a liability to take out (attacking dogs in the park) to having a boy who, apart from the odd grumble, can spend a whole weekend off the lead happily playing with a bunch of other dogs - most of which he's never met before!

There are still the odd one or two dogs that he takes exception to (and for this reason he is muzzled where I have no control over which other dogs we may encounter) but this is a precaution now as opposed to the absolute necessity it once was

Oh! the post I was replying to has disappeared - mine makes very little sense now :(
