I've let my dog out as usual before going to bed and she won't come inside. Have tried everything - treats, running inside in hope that she'll chase me, just trying to grab her, throwing a blanket over her. Just can't get her back inside. What do I do? Can I leave her out there? It's quite a cold night - terrified she'll freeze to death. Any suggestions?

Sorry to hear about your problem. I hope she came inside in the end. If not I am sure, if she is not frail that she survived.

You need to find out why she did this so that you can prevent it in future. Fear is a big factor in dogs' lives. They are much more in touch with their survival instinct of fight/flight. If something around the doorway or inside the house has scared her then she will not be able to cope with the fear and is trying to distance herself from it.

Feel free to post if you are still having problems. Perhaps, for a while, you could put a long line on her so that you can put a foot on it to catch her when she is outside.

If its too cold for you , then its too cold for your dog without shelter.

Is there a reason you can think of? Has she got into trouble before for not coming to you / not coming in?. I saw a woman at the park screaming at her dog and shaking it by the collar shouting when I tell you to.come , you COME . I did say to her way to go ..by abusing your dog you have just taught it never to come back cos it knows it will get bollicked' ....

My dog sometimes get freaked out by daft things ..the last time it was a tiny stuffed toy on a friends keys ..she refused to.come in so I left the door open and threw treats leading to a safe area for her (under the table). She came in eventually..but its important to understand your dog is not being naughty refusing to.come in ..if she has never done this before and its out of character there I something wrong and locking her out isn't the way to go ..she will be scared, cold ,maybe escape or get stolen..for the once in a lifetime this has happened you should wait and make sure she is safe. If it starts to become a problem.put her on a lead and go out with her last thing. Just because you don't know what the issue I doesn't mean there isn't one . Be patient and try and reassure her that she is safe if it happens again

Sensible comments from Raven Oaktree, the one thing that's absolutely certain is that in the dogs mind their is a reason.
