Hi,

We have two gorgeous whippet dogs. One 20 months, one 15 months. They have run together in the fields since they were able to.

The 15 month old one has significant potential for racing, and has considerable pace but he doesn't seem to want to pass the leading dog/bitch but rather runs full pelt until he gets to the dog at the front (normally 30 yards max no matter what the start) then wants to play - absolutely no hint of agression from him, but he wants to play with the leading dog.

If they dont want to play then he'll drop back and accelerate to their other side and see if they then want to play. Consequently he gets beat for most races which is a bit frustrating as he seems to be quite fast since he can catch up with the leading whippet with ease.

Solos dont seem to help as he only puts in a token effort/time as he is dis interested. Away from the racing he is keen to chase and would chase a crisp bag blowing in the wind if he saw it at half a mile away!.

In the end, it doesnt really matter to us as first and foremost he is a pet, and thats what matters most. We were just wondering if there was anything we could do to make him more interested in getting to the lure first.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks

Why dont you post in ped whippet racing as well??

I dont really have any advce other than i was told not to run my two together as they get used to running and playing together.

Good luck though :luck:

try putting something on the lure like a bit of meat and let him chase it then see if that makes him keener, but i agree with the last post i never let my dogs run together when they are puppies. imo :))

u cud try putting blinkers on his muzzle so he doesnt c the other dog ad thinks hes in a solo. try wot john g said too something on the lure. if he is food orientated take a tub of food up the track with u but show him it @ the traps. make sure u shout for him. take his fave toy up the track if he has one that squeaks even better. theres @ least a few things u can try. good luck with him. :luck:

you dont no what to do for the best, bit of a grey area. will know next week sadies first run with a dog.mine run together along the walk but dont let them off in large open fields as they go wild my luck they would bump and knacker them.

good luck with the schooling known people run them with jsck russels over 50 yards to boost there confidence to pass. good luck :luck:
