Hi, I have two very boisterous dogs that love playing with other dogs. Unfortunately due to new work commitments, I will be working longer hours so wont be able to spend as much time walking them.

There are a couple of day care facilities in my area and wondered a) if day care is a good idea for them and b) what I should look for when choosing?

Any advise would be much appreciated.......

Thank you x

I havent actually seen any doggy day care places personally but if I were you, I would make an appt and go see them with your dogs, see what they offer etc and ask lots of questions.

THEN I would turn up unannounced and see how they are when they aren't expecting you.

If you feel comfortable - why not - I bet its great fun for the ruffers!

Welcome to Dog Forum - I am Anna and predictably, I need pictures of your boisterous dogs!!

Hi Banana,

Thanks for that, I might do that, then at least I'll catch them out if they're doing anything!!!

I've added photo now too!!!!

xx

Really good advice from Banana - especially turning up unannounced !!

For a really sociable dog, I think it sounds good :)

I think that doggy day care can work really well for the sort of dogs that are well suited to it. To those who are nervous, or who don't generally mix with all sorts of other dogs well, or who have particular fears, it can be worse than being alone.

Anna's advice of an unannounced visit is good, as is checking their policies on vaccinations (including kennel cough), flea and worm treatments for dogs that come to the day care, as there's nothing quite like having to worm your dog every month because their friends keep generously sharing their worms with them or taking a healthy dog in and them coming home with kennel cough. A good centre will have a policy which involves checking frequently that the dogs have indeed been treated.

Once your dog has spent a couple of days at the day care centre you'll have a really good measure of whether they enjoy it or not. Just watch your dogs' body language as you approach the centre and they'll tell you whether they enjoy going there or not.
