Doggie Vitamins

In the past I have recommend to clients to give their dog vitamins on a daily basis. But I was wondering why dogs actually need vitamins. They should get everything from their dog food right?

Wrong, dogs require vitamins on a daily basis just like us humans do. The vitamins help keep their skin and coat healthy, it strengthens their teeth, and increases their energy levels that they will need to function properly. However, if a dog is on a well-balanced quality dog food they will not require any vitamins. But if a dog is on a home cooked diet you may require some vitamins, you can speak to your vet and ask what ones would be suitable for your dog. Too much calcium can cause skeletal problems, especially in large-breed puppies; too much vitamin A can harm blood vessels and cause dehydration and joint pain. Excess vitamin D can prompt a dog to stop eating and harm bones. Always check with your vet before supplementing. If there is anything else you want to know just ask below.

I have always wondered how dogs get their vit D, put simply we humans use the sun to produce it, but if we were covered fully as dogs and indeed most mamals are we wouldn't be able to.
