can anyone give me a few ideas to why my 15 month old pup "colt" is having trouble sitting down? each time he goes backwards to sit or "reverse" he lets out a bit of a yelp. the pain seems to stem from his flanks towards his backlegs and slightly underneath. digestion problems..worms..muscle strain?? he doesnt really want to lie down the way the pain has him. hes still eating and drinking with no problem.

maybe trapped nerve? worms wouldnt cause such a reaction, likewise if it was a gut problem, wouldnt eat normally. any other signs? hows his behaviour?

just had a thought. has he been in contact with any prickly plants etc? i remember reading about a dog with similar problems. had splinter in the back.

is it only one side that hurts? any swelling, tender spots?

well hes a bit quiet on it, i walk him and his dad 3 miles in afternoon and 2 miles about 6pm. 1st walk he was ok, 2nd he wasnt really keen at all, sortve lagged back a bit. can i say that when he yelps its sharp not prolonged. no other blatant signs.

so, he walks fine (feet/pads sound ok), no limping (probably no twists, sprains) BUT hurts to sit down etc, reluctance to speed up/run (you said he lagged behind)

check his thighs, especially round the back of them. sounds like something in that area is hurting him everytime that muscle is 'bunched up' or stretched. walking wouldnt cause as much pain as movement is less.

trapped nerve, splinter, he might have knocked or caught it?

i'm not surprised he's quiet. sounds afraid that he'll set 'it' off if he goes on a mad one :(

yup thats about it in a nutshell. his dad pulled up once at a "simulated coursing" event ..he jammed the breaks on as he got up on the lure and twinged muscles in his inner thighs, he walked all stiff for a few days and it was obvious what hed done but cant work this one out yet? perhaps daylight viewing might show something up.

if you feel his legs, you might find a spot where he's tender. have to be gentle, though, because theres the risk of, if one is present, forcing a foreign body deeper in.

its worth a trip to the vet, at the very least they could give him something for the pain. chances are he's too scared/in pain to sleep, either. if he can get some rest, he'll feel alot better and it would give 'it' a chance to calm down.

just back from the vet, he done a full internal check feeling around and listened inside...then he gave COLTS body a massage in the area that i reckon the problem lay. seems to be a muscular strain around his flanks to the edges of his spine. he gave COLT a pain killing injection and a couple of tablets. ive got to take him back on monday for a checkover..so fingers crossed!!
