After reading the thread with Helen and Josie I wondered what is the law. I have been told by a few people and morons "you should put that dog on a lead". I only ever let them off the lead in a safe place and usually walk in quiet areas away from busy roads and usually there are other dogs off the lead as well.

Anybody got any stock answers for these people as I tend to flounder a bit cos I don't really know what the score is.

I have had dogs for years and walked them in more or less the same areas but these are my first whippets - why is it they seem to prompt a reaction or comment from some people??

Because they're jealous :D

Fallenangel has tons of witty replies  I'm not as polite!!

Bev, I spoke to the dog warden on the phone yesterday to check what my responsibilies are, and she's putting a leaflet in the post. When I get it, I'll share the info with you - but she did tell me that according to the Road Traffic Act 1988 Section 2 a dog should be on the lead on the public highway (there's a distance issue which I'll let you know when I have the leaflet) and if on public land then the dog may be off the lead but under control (and that includes voice control). She said it is a grey area, and that as long as your dog isn't harrassing a person, or attacking them, and you can demonstrate that you can call the dog in to you, then you have not committed an offence.

I feel that if someone is afraid of dogs, or doesn't like them, then they should call to you and ask for you to put the dog on a lead. Which would be fair enough. They shouldn't just lash out before you've even had a chance to open your mouth, simply because your dog trots across their path

Anyway, I'll let you know chapter and verse of the law when I get the leaflet tomorrow. She's sending me a spare to put through Mr Man's letterbox, but OH thinks this will "provoke and inflame" him, and that I should just forget about it. I'm afraid I don't think I can do that :(

There was a thread a while ago about exactly this - I think it was called "whippet rage?"

It's surprising how many people have encountered this bizarre prejudice.
