Hi,

I was just wondering if anybody knows of the law regarding dog attacks on other dogs??

The reason I am asking is I have often wondered when I have read articles regarding dogs attacking/killing other dogs when out on walks etc, it seems that nobody is ever held resposible??

We were discussing it at work this morning and nobody has a clue on where the law lies with regards to this.

Just curious thats all :)

My sister in laws rough collie was once attacked by a rottweiller whilst out walking some years ago. They reported it to the police but were told that as her dog was of its lead and the rottie was on its lead the owner could counter sue as it is actually illegal for a dog to be of its lead in a public place.

When William was attacked by a staffie early last year the police would do nothing as although it went for him it didn't get hold of him. The same dog attacked a JRT which needed 50 stiches in its back .Again the police did nothing as there were no wittnesses and it was a dog on dog attack

Sadly I don't think there is a law to protect the innocent dog, you just have to hope that if your dog is attacked the owner will pay your vet bill!

It is not illegal to have a dog off the lead providing it has a collar with ID on it. In certain areas a dog may not be off the lead, different councils have different rules.

The Dog Warden is the person to contact, they can go a visit the aggressive dogs owners and ask them to keep it under control.
