Just how good is it??

My old boy grommy is a wise old soul..he has been around along time and just seems to know stuff...but my pup Willow just amazes me with the stuff she remembers...2 examples...a few weeks ago i walked my husband to work..i then took Willow through our town center..im trying to get her used to all kinds of noise and hustle and bustle. It was about 9am on a Monday morning and there were lots of delivery vans around, lots of noise etc. There was a large van unloading trollies on a lift thing which Willow was a bit wary of, so we sat down near the lorry as i did CC training with her. The fella looked at me strange and i explained she was a pup and i was doing counter conditioning with her so he made as much noise and clanging about as he could..Willow soon became more chilled and when he had finished he came over an said hello to her..we took her to he truck and let her have a sniff ..all was good, i felt we had achieved something and we moved on..(thanking the lovely delivery driver)..we then went to get a key cut, walked through and alley..crossed a busy road and went o a pet shop that is allowed in ..just to walk her around and get her used to that..then we walked home..on the walk home a cat jumped out of a hedge and ran across the road ..scared us both to death.. :) ..a WEEK later..we walked my hubby to work..it was a monday again so town was full of delivery vans..when we got to the place she had sat before to get used to the van..she circled and sat..without any instruction from me..she just sat down...so i waitet a while with her..the telivery driver came and gave her a fuss and we moved on..she tried pulling me into the key shop..and she pulled me through the alley..she also stopped and looked in the gate of the garden that kung foo cat had umped out of !!..so even though she is walked 2/3 times a day and had 14 (at least walks) in between town walks..she seemed to remember everything about it...

the second thing that has amazed me is my daughter is home this week from UNI..Willow met her once when she was tiny..then again over christmas. Christmas time jess brought a lazer pen with her to play with willow..willow loved this pen and spent ages playing and pouncing on the red dot on the floor..this is the 3rd time willow has met my daughter..within 5 mins of my daughter stepping through the door Willow was nudging her then looking down at the floor..pawing the floor and looking at jess..asking for the pen!!!..it was christmas time..4 months ago..not only did she remember the toy, but she associated it with jess and was able to communicate very clearly what she wanted!!..this dog just seems to do stuff that amazes us every day..are we just being doting parents and think the sun shines out of her bottom...or is this level of memory unusual for a puppy?

Awesome!!!!

It is amazing what dogs remember! Especially if its a positive experience for them and they know how much fun they had the last time they saw that particular person!

Mine is the same!

He saw a cat a while a go under a black car parked on the street. Every time the car is parked there (not every day) Bear's ears prick up and he goes into stealth mode and looks under the car for the flipping cat!!!

it is truly amazing how clever dogs are! They really don't get enough credit sometimes!

Bear also loves Pets at Home store as his vet is in there. As he is rarely in there, every time he does go in there he makes a break for the food isle and hoovers up all the lose food and treats that have been dropped on the floor! He knows exactly where he is going and not been in there for months!

I think it's their nose that guides them. They remember a particular smell that they loved and just follow their nose!

Our dogs are awesome!

I love dogs ..they are pawsome :) ..im just amazed at her level of intelligence, she is so much smarter than any dog ive had before :)

There is lots of evidence that dogs remember their littermates for at least the first 18 months after they are separated. Pups meeting each other at shows are well known for seeking out family members even if they have never seen those littermates since being separated from their mum. Dogs have a much better memory for this sort of thing than cats, according to lots of studies.

It doesn't surprise me at all that Willow is showing this sort of trait- GSDs are fabulous for remembering training sessions and routines, and this is why training needs to be varied very often, daily if possible, to avoid reinforcing bad behaviours as much as good ones and to maximise learning rather than remembering from repetition.

If you read about a dog that has been bereaved yet turned up at the same spot every day for years waiting for their owner, I am not at all surprised that the majority of these dogs are GSDs or GSD crosses.

This can be a negative as well as a positive. A GSD in rescue kennels is one of very few dogs that could well starve themselves not because the food isn't available but because the right human isn't present to tell them to eat it. For this reason it's a very good idea if you have a GSD for the dog to get used to more than one person doing dinner, doing training sessions and generally being involved in the dog's routine.

I had a lodger 3 years ago, for 3 months. She was a trainee teacher on a placement close to my home and she moved away at the end of the placement and now lives in the Middle East as an English teacher in a private school over there. She came to visit 6 months after leaving and Molly went ballistic at the back of the door well before she got to the door and has done so for all of her visits even though they are separated from each other by almost a year. Katherine is clearly a very exciting person who Molly loves, and Molly remembers her very well indeed.

Owww, thanks for that info eingana..the seeking out litter mates really shocked me..then made me feel a little sad :( ..Also very useful advice about the routine , she loves routine, but i can see how it can work against us now you have explained..will try and differ what we do and try to get others to feed her. That is such a sweet story about your lodger...i bet she could have cried with happiness getting a welcome like that..i much prefer dogs to humans ya know... ;)

Molly will be Katherine's bridesmaid at the end of the year when she gets married- that's how much Molly and Katherine get on :) I credit Molly with being very forgiving and absorbent in getting Katherine through the most stressful bits of her course :) I'm on the lookout for a really tiny tiara that will fit between her ears ;)
