Cats 'farmed for skins in EU'

BBC News has seen evidence which suggests that cats are being farmed for their skins in the European Union.

Let me say that cats and dogs are not farmed for their fur in the 15 EU member states

EU commissioner David Byrne

It is thought that tens of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands of cat and dog skins are traded in Europe each year.

Campaigners say that now is the time for national governments or the European Commission to act.

Europe, it seems, is a magnet for cat and dog fur.

Cat blankets, so the aficionados say, are good for rheumatism.

US ban

Dog pelts are often labelled misleadingly and sold as the fur of some exotic, even mythical beast.

Cat and dog fur trade

Campaigners claim 2 million cats and dogs slaughtered every year

Main exporter: China

12 to 15 adult dogs needed to make a dog fur coat

Up to 24 cats needed for cat fur coat

Cat and dog fur also used in hats, gloves, shoes, blankets, stuffed animals and toys

Dog fur sometimes labelled as: Gae-wolf, sobaki, Asian jackal, goupee, loup d'Asie, Corsac fox, dogues du Chine, or simply fake or exotic fur

Cat fur sometimes labelled as: house cat, wild cat, katzenfelle, rabbit, goyangi, mountain cat

Since the US has banned the trade of cat and dog skins, the European market has expanded.

A video seen by BBC correspondent Tim Franks shows one Belgian furrier displaying a blanket he says was made from cats farmed in Belgium.

What is more, he says that stray cats and dogs are rounded up and skinned.

That would seem to contradict the assertion from the officials who help run the EU at the European Commission that there is no cat or dog farming inside the union.

"Let me say that cats and dogs are not farmed for their fur in the 15 member states of the European Union," EU Health and Consumer Protection commissioner David Byrne wrote to a British member of the European Parliament last year.

Officials in Brussels repeated on Thursday that they had no evidence of cat or dog farming in the EU.

They said it was up to national governments to ban the trade in cat and dog fur.

Alsatian coat

So far, though, only Italy has brought in such a ban.

British MEP Struan Stevenson told the BBC that two million cats and dogs are being killed in China alone each year, in order to satisfy demand in Europe.

He also said that he has seen videos of animals being skinned alive.

As evidence of the trade he has collected:

A blanket made out of four golden retrievers, bought in Copenhagen

Individual cat skins complete with eye-holes, paws and tails, bought in Barcelona

A full-length coat made out of up to 42 Alsatian puppies, bought in Berlin

Campaigners accuses the European Commission of lacking the political will to address the issue, arguing that the trade is not only morally repugnant, but also a case of consumer fraud.

The British Department of Trade and Industry says it is examining the case for more scientific testing and more accurate labelling.

But it says that scientific testing very difficult to do on account of the expense and the shortage of laboratories capable of doing it.

This link shows some facts about the use of dogs and cats in the fur trade.

The appalling treatment of animals, must warn you of shocking images in the video.

Fur trade

Oh God, I feel sick. I would never wear any fur, never have, never will.     :(

to1.gif

I have just watched part of this video... it made me feel physically sick!

I would never wear a real fur coat...

I have recently seen children's toys made of real fur!!!!!!! they are cat toys..

I wonder what fur they have used to make them...

How are they selling these products on shelves in stores in the UK?

I have seen some terrible things on this web site, through links...

tragically we can't change everything that goes on in this world.....

Nasty isnt it .......Pet dogs have been stolen to order for year's for the fur trade ......The Gun dogs are a fav :( ..........

sounds too horrible, can't bring myself to watch it :(

I've seen footage of dogs being skinned before. I happened upon the film by accident while channel hopping. The image has stayed with me.

The sheer inhumanity of inflicting that much horror and suffering on the animals before being killed and whilst being killed appalls me.

I just don't have the courage to look it sounds too horrid. :x I have never worn fur either and never will its sick.

Sorry but I couldn't bear to look either :( :( :( We do live in a very sad world :(

Sorry...know if I look I wont be able to erase the images. :( but good on you EMILY to bring it to our attention.

I don't think I have ever seen anything quite as horrific as that video

I't an absoloute disgrace that this allowed to happen  Actually I can't even find the words to express how angry I am

:( My god i wish i had not have watched that video that is just the worse thing ive ever seen   :( :(

I did an animal health and welfare course and saw alot of awful things, but will never forget one footage i saw of the dog meat market- they stole dogs from the streets and tied their front legs behind their back- they then hook them up to drain alive from a ceiling in the 'butchers shop'.

Each dog saw this happening to all the others, so by the time it was his time to be kiled he knew exactly what was going to happen, and the cries i will never forget- nothing i'd heard before, think all of us were crying together- utterly disgusting. What makes this worse is that there are an awful lot more food that they can eat- dont have to do this.

Also should mention in east asia bears are kept in 4ft cages- have a tube inserted into the pancreas and are drained like that for years- some are left for upto 10 years, no exercise, and a scrap of food each week- just enough to live, when they stop producing bile they are left to starve slowly. These bears never see light of day, the image of a hundred beautiful bears hanging in cages is another sad trade that goes on- just for chinese medicine....

There are many of these appaulling trades occuring all over the world- some yet have not had any press coverage and are still being tortured everyday without a care in the world......

its depressing but the way i got through my course was to think- if we all do our 'bit' hopefully we can help? like to think so......

its a sick world. cruella de'ville should be fiction, not an every day fact of life. the people doing this are despicable, but probably poor, uneducated, and desparate for a wage. its the people creating the demand that need to be strung up. i'm against any kind of fur trade, but what such intelligent animals as cats and dogs must suffer :(

If there was a fall in demand for fur then things may slowly change. This is why it is so important for people to know where that fur trim on a coat, originated from.

Most people have no idea that dogs and cats are so inhumanely treated for their fur.

Being poor and or uneducated does not give these people the right to treat animals in this way. You do not need to be educated to know what pain is.

The sad truth is dogs and cats will always be savagely treated in Asia, because the people generally have absolutely no compassion for dogs or cats, indeed any animal. :'(

I know they have a different culture to us and they think very differently to us but I do not know why they treat animals the way they do. They simply do not see anything wrong with inflicting cruelty on animals. It’s like they’re from another world.

believe me, i would never condone cruelty to another living being. and i'm extremely aware of how differently eastern cultures view and treat animals, as they keep that same mentality over here. i've stopped asian children from throwing BRICKS at a dog i once knew. sad to say, i nearly crossed the line when some czech/eastern european kids thought it would be fun to stamp on 2 half grown pidgeons that had fallen out of their nest. the male was unharmed, but the female had a broken leg and her beak was nearly hanging off. my husband wasnt too impressed, as i refused to leave them incase those brats returned. i made him trek back to get a box to take them home in. with careful tending, missie made a full recovery, and both stayed with us for weeks until the vet felt they were able to join other rescued birds before release. pidgeons may be considered vermin, but NO animal should be allowed to suffer.

but even here in the uk, despicable acts occur. a few years ago a friend of mine lost his 3yr old gsd through poisoning. kane had sniffed a rabbit carcass on his walk through the eton playing fields. they had put poison out to cull the fox population. by the time my friend realised it was serious, it was too late. vomiting blood, spasms, blood from his back end. eton college denied responsibilty, and andy couldnt get the case off the ground. that sweet, loyal, beautiful dog ended in such terrible fear and pain, and justice was never served.

regardless. the key is to stop fur being seen as a status symbol. while jennifer lopez and all those rappers flaunt their coats, poorer people who look up to them want coats too, and other rich idiots will buy 'better' ones to out-do them. and having supermodels pose for peta, only for those self same models to then wear fur damages the cause :( who's going to take it seriously if even the advocates of say no to fur are exposed as hypocrites? animal rights activists also need to sort their act out. grave robbing is not a positive statement, and caused ALOT of support to turn away

thought it relevent to lynnes topic.
What i might have managed to do. I'm in the USA at the moment, the town i am in may let me put a petition around then i can bring it home with me. So that should help, i have contacted tony blair and jack mcconnell and intend to have a meeting with my local mp when i get home.

good, this MUST stop. hopefully you'll get enough articles etc, that they cant ignore the problem :luck:
