As you might have noticed, Gelert at the somewhat old age of 6 is developing some interesting new tricks. Having been the most laid-back, submissive whippet imaginable, he now suddenly seems to be getting very dominant. He peed all over Joanna and her pup on sunday, all over a lady's handbag at the races last week and when he meets Olivia's Tess he tries to mount her nonstop, having never shown the slightest interest in bitches before (even when they're actually on heat) .

As I'm probably getting a new pup soon, I'm a bit worried about this. If it's a dominance issue, will he try it on with the new pup regardless of whether it's a dog or a bitch? Will it be something that sorts itself out in time or just gets worse?

The problem seems much worse after competitions too, is this common?

It could be that was is hypher from the days events Elizabeth with all the excitement, as I have all girls I'm not sure but you saw what Sienna did to my car at coursing and out of all 3 she would be the least likely to do something like that, but she was very excited so it's a possibility pehaps

Yes, I think it might be that after the coursing (he used to be a pain after catching a rabbit too, hyper all night after  ), but the mounting thing has been going on for a few months now. I wonder if it's because he's been getting used to larger groups of dogs, as he's been in the car, houses etc with Olivia's two quite a lot recently; perhaps he feels he needs to assert his authority in company. I'm not convinced it's entirely a sex thing, we tried to mate him a couple of times last year and he showed no interest at all!

Sorry Joanna, he does seem to like peeing on white dogs especially

LOL :D Fynn just looked completely appalled, as did James, I might add.

I think it is just after being with hyped up baying hounds, and yes, just a dominance thing. Mine fit neatly into a pack with Rae's dogs, but they do like to Lord it over the girls. Archie is horrendous at times since we got Fynn. He is a bit lead aggresive now, and never used to be. It is all about control and power. Therer is a period of setttling in with a new puppy, but just let them get on with it. It is tempting to try and interfere, but just ignore bad behaviour and reinforce the positive. I bet all will be fine within a month, they seem to forget they were an only dog, and just relish the pack leader position

I should have warned James about it, it caught me out too. I'm also amazed at his good aim, usually it just goes all over his chest :b
