EARL
Dear little Earl is a 3 year old greyhound boy who was handed over to us about a year ago with his mother, Taz. He is a very pretty leggy boy and has a mostly white coat with some brindle patches. He is now in fabulous condition and is a healthy boy.
~ Earl’s Story ~
Earl sadly came to us in an extremely traumatised state and it has taken literally a year to get him to where he is now. Earl was surrendered into our rescue because he was ‘useless’ on the racetrack. It soon became apparent that this was because little Earl was absolutely petrified of everything and everyone. He came to us completely untrusting of anyone and bore the signs of having been handled very roughly in the past. When he first arrived he would not interact with people, preferring to curl up in a trembling ball on the floor, wishing to disappear. He showed extreme fear type reactions to being touched on the neck and could not cope with a lead or collar. Absolutely everything scared this little chap, from cars on the road to even birds flying overhead.
~ Personality ~
Earl has improved massively from the terrified little wreck he was when he first came to us. He is in a foster home with Sue, our animal behaviourist, and she is doing daily sessions with him. This has helped massively. Earl is now inquisitive with strangers and will happily approach them if they aren’t too overbearing in their greeting. When in the security of his home, Earl is a very happy, bouncy boy who is full of the joys of life. He likes to play in the garden with his doggie friends and loves curling up for cuddles with his people, resting his head on your lap. Now that he knows what affection is, he laps it up like the eager puppy he is. He walks well on a harness and doesn’t spook nearly as easily as he used to. He is still sensitive around the neck area, but is happy to be stroked there as long as no strong pressure is used.
~ Other Animals ~
Earl is good with other dogs, and has relied on them very heavily during his recovery. He is sharing his foster home with 3 other greyhounds, a collie and a small terrier and has greatly improved from watching how these well-adjusted dogs behave in new or unfamiliar situations. He loves playing chase in the garden and interacts nicely with the other dogs.
~ In the Home ~
Earl has adjusted very nicely to living in a home and relishes his comforts. He likes to follow his foster mum around the house, but is content to be left by himself too. He has a very hearty appetite and has put on a lot of much needed weight to his slim figure. He is still trying to figure out what the big deal is with toys, but he will sometimes take a fancy to one of the squeaky bunnies and toss them around like a little loon in the garden. He is housetrained, can be left completely alone for a couple of hours, and is not destructive. He wears a DAP collar regularly which is helping him to relax and feel comfortable in himself.
~ Out and About ~
The big wide world remains a scary place for Earl and he is still not completely comfortable with noisy roads or very crowded areas. He can also be very frightened of gateways and doorways and will go through them provided there are no strangers on the other side. He is definitely hugely improved, however, and enjoys going to the beach or to woodland parks where he can sniff and explore. Earl wears a harness when out on walks as it is safer than a collar. If something really scared him and he ran, pulling on the lead and collar, it would likely send him into a full blown panic. Earl walks very nicely on the harness, however, and doesn’t pull.
~ Earl’s Ideal Home ~
Earl is a very special dog and needs a special owner. This boy’s plight has touched all our hearts and we would love to find him the fantastic, caring home he deserves. Dear Earl needs someone with big hearts willing to take on the challenge of continuing our work, letting him blossom at his own pace, and loving him while he tries. He will require a quiet home with no young children and no loud noises so that he can truly relax and stop feeling afraid. Potential owners would also need to be aware of Earl’s current boundaries when introducing new people to him, as someone reaching forward to pet his neck may send him into a panic. As good as he is now, the change of home may cause Earl to relapse a bit at first, but we will provide as much support, guidance and training as possible to help you. Whoever takes this boy on will be most definitely rewarded in spades. You will get to see this beautiful boy continue to grow in confidence and trust you. There is no better feeling.
