Our 2 year old lurcher seems to have learnt to tell the time! He has started to wake every morning at 4am, I used to be able to let him out to do his business and would then go back to sleep until 6 when it is breakfast time. However, this last week he has started whining and barking for those 2 hours. I have tried ignoring it which has not had any effect. I have also tried calmly telling him "quiet". Which lasts for about 5 minutes (until I get back into bed ) and then starts again.

Any advice greatly appreciated!!

He is achieving his aim which is to get some attention. 4 am is the natural time for dogs to wake and leave the nest to toilet. We usually train this out of them in puppyhood. I would try to darken the room (I know it is not light at 4am but it will come) and mask any early morning noises with a radio on low.

If you are confident in his ability to go through the night then just ignore him once you have told him to quieten down from a distance.

Make sure all his normal doggy needs are met during the day. Sufficient exercise for his breed and age, mental stimulation, breed appropriate activities such as chasing things etc. Is he warm enough during the night?

Teach him during the day, to settle without attention seeking. Ignore his advances and make a point of giving him attention when he is lying quietly somewhere.

Thank you for the advice. It has only been happening the last few months. I had thought it might be due to exercise as it has been more difficult during the dark mornings/evenings. Once he has been fed and for the rest of the day he does settle very easily and is no trouble at all. Will try just leaving him as I am confident he can last the night. Thanks again.

If it is due to exercise then that is what needs addressing. Can you not dress up in reflective gear and take a torch on walks? If not then do try to increase the amount of brain work your dog does. Train some tricks and obedience exercises and introduce some scent work. Scent work is very tiring. Take a look at www.talkingdogsscentwork.co.uk .
