Early neutering - what do you think?

I think its the dogs boll..ks. look we know theres a lot of fools out there not caring for the dogs and just in it for a pay day but i hope we dont go too far.

neutering yes, 'early neutering' no. I think they should be fully grown before they are neutered. 6weeks old is terrible.. I got my dad a kitten a few years ago, and his vet really tried to get him to have her spayed while she was only a few months old, and said she shouldn't be allowed out of the house until it was done??? Madness.

agree with you hanneroon. im getting totally fed up being told you gota do this and that.

I think that male dogs should really only be done if there is a medical need or it will help behaviour.

Females I feel should be done, but not at an early age. The debate is when is the right time. Some say after the first season and some will say earlier.

My brother's female was done at four months old and she doesn't seem to be affected however I did think it was done too early at the time.

Why do you think that male dogs should not be castrated? A simple half hour procedure carried out on a young fit healthy dog REMOVES the risk of Testicular cancer and greatly reduces the risk of Prostate Cancer in later life! (both common causes of death)

Both my boys have been done Murf at 13 months and Rufus at 9 months, both were 100% back to normal and wanted to run around within 24 hrs of the ops.

I am all for animals being neutered and genuine breeders being licensed, I think there are enough people who know what they are doing breeding dogs in this world without people who don't have a clue or are in it for the money, adding to the unwanted dog population in this country.

With regard to the early neutering debate, my personal opinion is that males should be done between 6-12 months old, Bitches I can see both sides of the argument, If you spey a bitch before her first season you are removing the risk of mammary tumours as there has never been any mammary development at all, as well as ovarian cancer, unwanted pregnancy and pyometra. where as after a season the mammary risk is slight, but still there, This is an individual choice that people should consider carefully and discuss with there own vet.

My bitch had a full bi-lateral Mammary strip by the age of 6 due to tumours, Personally I would spey any future bitch I get before there first season to eradicate that risk.

I had my Lab Sam castrated when he was 10 months old , I was planning to have him done anyway at around 12 months but he suddenly began to show an interest in the ladies and I didnt want to risk him wandering , plus the health benefits too . Have always had males neutered around this age and never had problems , non of the change of character that some people seem to fear, small op and bouncing back within 24 hours .

I`ve only ever had two bitches, one, on the advice of my Vet at the time was spayed before her first season when she was 6 months old , the other one was spayed between the first and second season . The one spayed early retained a rather babyish demeanor, never really seemed to mature mentally and I did regret the early spay, whereas the one spayed later seemed to handle the op much better and the recovery too .

I hate the thought of young pups being neutered, six weeks old is just far far too young to me .
