Here is some information about our judge for the EAWC show in late March. Karen is only over for a few days and the tickets to get her here are a gift from her husband. I know she is really looking forward to the show. Schedules available now.

Karen Bowers Lee is a second-generation dog person. The Surrey Hill Whippet line was begun in 1979 by her mother, Carolyn J. Bowers and Karen has participated in whippet activities for most of her life.

She is a very active Whippet breeder and exhibitor achieving many successes in the ring, who has increased her participation in performance events throughout her association with the breed. All the Surrey Hill dogs which live with her participate in racing and lure coursing in addition to their showring duties. Her emphasis is on versatility for the breed, and presenting Whippets and Whippet activities to the public in a positive way. She is also a colour-genetics buff and serves as a resource for new people who are puzzled about the inheritance of coat colours in their Whippets. Not biased herself she is very proud of the outstanding dogs of all colours that she has made up to champions, from dark brindles to pale blue fawns.

Surrey Hill bred litters account for a number one ranked USA show Whippet, a National Specialty winner, the holder of the Canadian record for most Whippet specialties won, and many top producers for both themselves and other kennels. Surrey Hill has bred over 50 American champions and at least 30 Canadian and South American champions. The kennel has also produced numerous performance dogs, and Karen has bred or owned five holders of the Joint title for being a champion in both showing and straight-track racing—a truly remarkable record for a small show kennel.

International bloodlines and developing relationships with breeders overseas has been a growing area of interest for Karen since the International Whippet Congress in 1996. Partnerships with several breeders from other continents have brought success and created new friendships. Karen’s philosophy is that the best Whippets should be capable of winning in any country.

She is excited about the prospect of judging in England and plans to continue to include British bloodlines in her breeding program, so feels that the opportunity to examine a representative entry will be a valuable learning experience to draw from in the future. She looks forward to her assignment and hopes that the exhibitors will all have an enjoyable day out at the EAWC.
