has anyone any info on white embrocation, ive been told it warms the dog up ,if so what other use's does it have and is it safe to use.if not ,what other embrocation,s could i use for injuries and rub downs.

I use Alco-Ectolin which is available from most greyhound supplies and i think is probably the most common.

It does warm the dog up before you race (i think i might be a bit allergic to it though because every time i rub my dogs down i get red blotches all over my arms and face).

It is a good idea to rub your dog down anyway even if you don't use an embrocation before you exercise/race it in cold or wet weather as most people tend to bang their dogs straight in the traps cold, you always see athlete's warming up before exercise don't you, to stop/reduce the risk of cramp and muscle injuries.

My dogs love it and will stand there all day letting you massage them.

We also have a wax like human rub which we have used for the dogs from boots which i always use if i have a stiff neck in the morning and you can feel it warming your skin up, it's lovely but it does have a strong smell though.

I'm sure other's will reply with different lotions etc.

hi neil is the white rub you are refering to actualy under the name White Liniment BP if so it does give a warm feeling as i use it myself on my legs it is the turpentine oil which it contains that makes it feel warm which increases the blood supply to the area you rub it on it contains the following oleic acid BP ammonium cholride BP ammonia solution strong BPand purified waterBP sometimes people are sensitive to turpentine oil so if using go steady .not sure if there is any banned substance in that but you could ask .steve

hi steve , not sure what it is,all i know is it is called white embrocation, and supposed to be good stuff, have you got any tips on any good linaments for rubbing down and unjuries.ive always used curacho for rubbing down and iodised oil for injuries.do you think these are anygood,

Neil, i'm not so sure about curacho as after you have rubbed the dog down you can't feel it getting warm??

vicky, i agree , whats your views on comfrey oil ,thi is supposed to be very good

I don't know if it's the same or not but if our dogs have had wrist injuries or knocked up toes we have comfrey leaves that you boil up and once it's cooled soak the dogs foot in it, it is quite good for reducing the swelling.

I think it is a bit of an old wifes thing but it does work, most people you will find that knock it have probably never used it.

I know it can be used for all kinds of injuries but i'm not sure what.

Comfrey oil has been used by herbalists for a long time to help healing for bruising, its part of the borage family of plants.  It has remarkable powers to heal tissue and bone due to allantoin a cell proliferant that promotes the growth of connective tissue, bone and cartilage and is easily absorbed through the skin.  American research has shown comfrey breaks down red blood cells, hence being used for bruising, its country name is bruisewort.

It is used externally as a poultice for varicose ulcers and a compress for varicose veins, also minor burns.

It is used for gastric ulcers, colitis and some respiratory disorders.

A vinegar extract is supposed to help with cirrhosis of the liver!  and studies have found that it can influence sex hormones stimulating ovaries and testes!!

However, this is one of the plants there is much discussion about the pros and cons, so the rule is don't take too much!!!!

Personally I can't vouch for too many of the above claims!!  It does work on humans (so I'm told!!!), but I haven't tried it on the dogs!!!

Comfrey oil with eucalyptus (a natural antiseptic) and knitbone, can be bought from Holland & Barratt health food stores across the UK - 100ml approx £3

Nigel - K9 is great - what a wealth of knowledge we all have pooled together.  I hope everyone is not too bored by the above, just thought it might interest / amuse??
