Hello, I am new on here and am seeking some advice about my 10yr old poodle. She was diagnosed last Feb with an enlarged heart and her symptoms include the cough and retching. She is on Vetmedin, Frusol, Fortekor and one other drug. She seems to be off her food at the moment too and the amount of time she spends coughing is increasing. In herself she still seems quite bright but I am worrying about how much she is suffering, is she in pain? Saw the Vet last week and we are due back again this morning. Just don't know what to do for the best?

Anyone been through something similar?

Thanks

Sometimes our pets just wear out. Do listen to your vet and ask him/her just what you asked us. There may be better drugs or an increase in dosage of the existing drugs that might help. You could also ask for a referral to a heart specialist.

Your vet will try everything he or she can to keep your dog pain free and happy. It is what they train to do. At the end of the day there may be nothing more that anyone can do.

Remember the adage "better a day too soon (for that final decision) than a day too late.

Hope your vet has some magic up their sleeve.

Thanks for the response gypsysmum2. Just back from the vet, she feels we can carry on for a bit yet, such a relief! If only they could talk!

Like that adage and will bear it in mind when I feel the time does come! Such guilt attached to having to be the one to make the final decision, but don't want her to suffer.

She can talk but only through body language. You have already heard her or you wouldn't have taken her to the vet. Just stay tuned in :)
