I was wondering, as i'm new to lure coursing...

How is competition set up?

Is it like proper coursing with "24 dog stakes" etc, with two-dog heats culimating in semis and a final or what?

I saw a couple of pics with dogs wearing the red and white colars which made me wonder how similar they are?

regards Sam

I think it depends on which organisation you do it with, some do stakes some not; the BSFA doesn't do it in stakes, couldn't say why other than it's a mixed-breed event; perhaps someone else could explain in more detail. Some use knitted collars, others racing coats. I don't think anyone would claim it can be directly compared to hare coursing.

BSFA system

sussex longdogs

sorry, don't know if any of the other orgs have websites.

At the country shows, it is pretty much as you described. Stakes of however many have entered, with some recieving byes if necessary to give 8 dogs in a quarter final. All runs are between 2 dogs, on a knockout basis, one dog wearing red, the other white. At some shows, the lure runs betweem "gates", which the dogs must pass through. The winner goes through more gates than the other dog. If they get all their gates, the first dog home gets it. Other clubs have no gates, just judge the course itself. Wherever you go lure coursing, the main thing is to find out how that particular club or show are running things before you run, to avoid confusion when it all starts.!

Depends which country you are in!

Very well established in the USA.

Go to www.asfa.org for rules equipment, results etc.

Different again in Europe.
