I've just found this site - Just Answer, and you can ask a question about your dog's health at any time and get an answer. There is a fee, but the people answering the questions are all experts in their field. So, the people usually answering the questions are vets and vet techs.

Obviously not an alternative to a visit to the vet, but not a bad idea if it's 2am and you don't know if you need to go to the emergency clinic or not.
 
sounds dangerous to me, what if they give the wrong diagnosis ?You may not give the right symptoms .

Who would you complain to ? if things went wrong ?
