Can not offer an explanation - but...our 9 month pups are exactley the same.

I was recently reading an American Whippet book where they stated that a dogs eyes should be dark and points would be deducted for yellow eyes. Do you know if this is classed as yellow eyes?

Jaq x

Dont you think that means the white bits being yellow? Why should a dog be jeopordised for having a certain colour of eyes?

Our last whippet Jack had the most beautiful eyes almost golden, Kai and Stirling are in the change over period at the moment and still looking dark brown.

Points docked or no points docked Esme is lovely

:D

I was interested in this too as Josh and Muffin both had blue eyes as puppies. I asked the vet about it and she said that a lot depended on the colouring of the dog and I think she said dogs like labradors never had blue eyes. I think the blue eyes are lovely - in some ways it's a shame they eventually turn to brown.

i have no idea about colour genetics or eye colouring but i do know one thing...esme is gorgeous!! and she has grown so much!!!

(w00t) look at the size of Esme, hasn't she grown ! She is so the 'supermodel whippet' posing for the camera, she's  o:)

When we got Eli at 10 weeks, his eyes were almost brown with only the slightest hint of blue left.

William on the other hand had very blue eyes when we got him at 9 weeks, and seems to have gone through exactly the same stages as Esme's, (and I think they're around the same age aren't they Olivia? He was born 5th Nov) I wonder if Bean's are the same?

I'm sure it mentions on a thread somewhere that ped whippets don't carry the gene for blue eyes, and I was beginning to wonder if William's will ever go brown, so it made me feel better everytime I saw a pic with Esme's eyes looking the same!

Here's a pic I just took....not a brilliant illustration as camera still broken and still having to use mobile....but you get the idea

By the way Olivia, must add that Esme's blossomed from that adorable rice pudding caked puppy into a really stunning young lady!

I just looked and thought, bloody hell, his nose looks massive! But yes, we do just have to shower those whippy noses with kisses don't we! :* :* :*

The bellsouth whippet coat colour page now has a section on eye colour, although not much information for us techies:

whippet eye colours

I think if you have dd recessive blue, ALL pigments will be dilute including skin and iris. However there seems to be quite a lot of underlying variability, some of the non-dilutes on this link have fairly pale brown eyes, which might explain why dogs that are all recessive blue have eye colour that ranges from light brown through grey to yellow. True dark brown, undilute eyes in blues seem to be associated with whatever gene causes the black eyeliner effect, maybe it's a modified masking thing, and these have pigmented nose leathers as well.

Remember, although these equations make colour genetics seem straightforward, they are not; having bred poultry for years now, even when you've been very careful to exclude and select purely for colour, each generation always throws up some surprises, I think there are many, many more modifying factors than research has yet thrown up.

Also most young animals are born with paler eyes, melanin, which causes darker pigment, seems to develop after birth.

In humans eye colour can also be affected by the arrangement of collagen fibres in the eye, fine arrangement resulting in blue and coarse grey. This might be another factor in the variability within browns and dilutes.

Kaz, you want big noses? Get a load of these beauties....both attached to William

Sorry Olivia & Moriarte, have become distracted from your interesting eye genes by the silly subject of big noses. I'm a girl of limited intelligence

Hi Ponygirl,

Yes they are pretty much the same age- Esme was borh on 8th November. His eyes look very simillar. I keep hoping Esme's eye's will go brown, but I'm not sure why (maybe because her sister Tess has the most beautiful brown eyes), but I am begining to think that this colour is just and nice- I really like the shading of the colours- more interesting maybe. I also think that Nancy, whose pic I posted earlier, is stunning and her eyes are quite pale, I wonder when they finally got to that colour. PAUL????????

Elizabeth- Totty has dark pigmentation and dark eyes, Nancy has paler pigmentation and paler eyes. Esme seems to have a very dark nose and black whiskers.................. but very pale eyes. It is all very confusing. I think that there must be so many genes controlling it that it becomes unpredictable. I also know that the same genes in different combinations can have different effects, ie X gene will phenotypically be A if Y is at the next locus, but if Z is at the next locus x will pheotypically be a. All deeply confusing, and extremely hard to predict or see any patterns.

Talking of big wet noses:

Totty's eyes are dark, but his nose leather is definitely diluted. It wouldn't surprise me if there is some other recessive genetic factor(s) involved, for which both parents are heterozygous for, otherwise you wouldn't get paler-eyed offspring from 2 dark eyed parents, and it seems independent from the all over self dilution. This stuff is fascinating, but very frustrating in practise
