Just wondering about these collars

I have some and they're lovely but I've never used them as a collar and lead type collar

Are they usually strong enough for a pair of lungers (if see a cat) \ occasional pullers?

It would be nice to hear what type of collars your whippets wear. I also have the standard leather whippet collars but my slim boy can nearly slip it (if he really wants to)

Have you tried buying a whippet collar from the Internet? I bought my small neck and small head whippet a made by order collar, specially to fit her. I am glad I did because she ( a rescue) is very nervous at times and has once slipped her collar that was bought from a pet shop. I have 4 whippets and 2 of them wear whippet collars, the other 2 are just 13 months old now and it's almost time the got a whippet collar too. I have always had whippet collars for my dogs, now I have 3 bitches and they are smaller in the neck and head. Just shop around and find the best fitting collar, too slack a collar and the whippet can wriggle out, which can be very dangerous.

Yes. I have correctly fitted (and very lovely) Martingdale fabric collars. My query - which I didn't make clear - was the strength of them. Obviously fabric will wear over time.

With regard to leather whippet collars. Agreed its probably because they are standard shop bought and not fitted.

I will buy a fitted one in the future. My reluctance is measuring. I've bought on line before and I never quite get it right but at least there would be several holes and a buckle!!

if they're well made I can't see a whippet breaking it...has it got Metal fittings throughout? Mine use them all the time and have never had a problem, mine are good on lead though so maybe not a good illustration!

The martingale Diesel wears at the moment is three years old and is used every day for walking. He's extremely good on the lead unless he sees a rabbit or such. There is no wear on the collar at all. The only signs of age is some slight discolouring of the exposed navy webbing. The collar is not worn indoors he's got a house collar for his tag.

With regards to measuring nothing could be easier although it does tend to be what people get wrong. For measuring: tape measure completely around the neck were the collar will sit. This should be a tight measurement so you are not measuring fresh air. When fitting the collar you should only be able to get a couple of fingers under the collar, the collar should be a close fit.

Just edited to say when fitting a martingale collar there should be between 1/2" and 1" between the metal slides that carry the control loop to have the collar fitted correctly.

Make sure that the fittings are cast metal and not welded as these will not break under strain. We only use cast fittings on all of our collars as we would never sell anything that we would not use on our own dogs.

Also note that the collars shouldn't be just 'fabric' but should be some type of nylon (like regular collar material) or seatbelt test material with fabric trim to decorate it. So while it may loo fabric,

I have designer style martingale collars and leads that I have had and used for over 10 years. Some of the 'fabric decoration' has faded or frayed, but the collars themselves are as strong a the day they arrived. Unless chewed by naughty dog teeth LOL

I personally wouldnt use mine for all day walking....its not the casting/ metal work that you have to worry about breaking...its the stitching.

Mine use theirs in the house for comfort...and thats it.

I have nice leather collars for 'best'...

For everg day use...working..i use a strongstuff collar..

This guy makes them...and has done for years....for bulldogs, strongdogs etc....his collars are guaranteed for life.....and will never break.

They wont rot, stretch or break.

He makes lurcher / whippet shaped ones...tapered...and the ones me and my mates have are 100% spot on.

If the collar is correctly made there should not be a problem with the stitching breaking. If this is something that you have experienced it is something that you need to take up with the person who made the collar! The collar that Diesel is using has been used daily for the last three years and there is no signs of wear on the stitching. Used daily purely because it is a favourite collar so it gets some use

No bad experiences here.

Just wouldnt trust the collars wether it be stitching or material....when i really need a collar to support the dog if its worried by something or straining to get at something...

These collars surely cant be guaranteed?

The collars i mentioned above 100% will not break under normal conditions...

His leads have been used to tow cars and pull 4x4's out of mud!

They are guaranteed for life...think the only exceptions are chewing, fire and cutting.

What more can you ask of them?

I like the collars you make. Mine have 3 similar for the house.

So what are the strong stuff collars made from. Looks like three ply stitched nylon from the pics? Not criticising just curious. There's definitely stitching in them though.

No expert on the subject....but i think your right on the material.

Its stitched lengthways...right through the width...

See how the D loop isnt stitched on?...its right in the middle of the length of material he has used...and on the inside of the lot...so your dogs pulling on 5 layers....

He makes these tapered ones...

And does all sorts of others....1" /1.5" /2" etc...leads...harnesses...terrier couples...

Guaranteed for life.

Solid brass too.

I am a big fan of leather...and have some superb quality leather ones....but for working...leather wasnt lasting too long taking the constant hard work...

So i got 2 for mine...and theyre great. This collar for working and everyday use...the leather onea for the nicer times.
