On Sunday we went to the Falconry Fair at Chetwynd Park. There was some lure-coursing in the main arena as well as a talk on lurchers in the smaller ring.

I just wanted to say what great ambassadors for lurcher-owners the people who did the commentry and presentations were :) They came accross as very friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable and managed to balance the role of the working lurcher (and the functions of all the different crosses) with the huge problem of so many lurchers in rescue.

It was a real pleasure to see Mouse, the deaf saluki chasing the lure and also the young bull x greyhound retrieving his dummy

Where was this? we were in Shrewsbury at the weekend & passed a sign for a falconry show. Could it have been the same one?

Hebe will never forgive me if I drove past a lure coursing event & didn't let her join in :- "

It was most probably the same one as it's not that far from Shrewsbury, it was on Sun & Mon. :) We went on Mon as that's the main lurcher day, they do a coursing comp in the main arena, lurcher & terrier showing & lurcher obedience. They do demonstrations both days to promote lurchers in general & give advice/help.

When I took my dog lure-coursing he chased the lure so far and then slowed down, sniffed the air and flew off in the other direction

When I caught him, he was leaping up at the lady who was frying the burgers and she was holding a bag of burgers above her head!

I believe this is known as 'running cunning' :- "

I really wished he could have been at Chetwynd Park, but he was pts in January (aged nearly 14) and I am now, sadly dogless :(

(w00t) Hi Kane, Ive just been e-mailed this page and read with interest your comments. Im glad you enjoyed our impromptu talk in the countryside alliance ring and im pleased you found it informative. Mouse the deaf saluki and Trevor the bull x both live with me. Im very proud of both my dogs and do tend to waffle on about them, so im most glad you werent bored rigid -_- -_- -_-

Me...bored by lurcher-talk? Never!!!

I just wish my old dog Logan was still alive (he died in January) as I did some gundog work with him and seeing Trevor's face when he was bringing back the dummy and looking all pleased with himself brought back lots of happy memories!

As one of the 'unfortunate dogless' at present, I got way too excited by all the dogs at Chetwynd, to the point where I broke free from the 2 hawk-addict guys I was with and wandered off dog-spotting. I was the one at the ringside who kept answering mobile calls asking 'where the  have you wandered off to now?'!!!

(I was obviously a saluki in a previous life)

(w00t) Funny you should say that Kane, Trevs been on the shoot as a beating dog all last season. He is trained to the whistle and works very close infront which makes him ideal on the shoot, puts alot of the gun dogs to shame.

Sorry to hear about Logan. Will you be able to get another lurcher soon, and if so what cross would you go with? :D

Logan was actually an Irish Terrier, but a rather tall one! I know a lot of people think they are a bit (w00t) but I love them and properly handled they can do just about anything that a small lurcher could do. They were bred to work above ground and are built on more speedy lines than an typical terrier. I suppose, the problem is that they are a real mix of very headstrong and very sensitive and it is a combination that a lot of people struggle with, or write off as 'thick and daft' when they are actually one of the smartest breeds I've ever known.

I'd love to see an Irish T x greyhound, as I've read a few articles about them and there is a lurcher-owner where I live who has a friend with a 1/4 Irish 3/4 greyhound in the Midlands. I've also met an IT x whippet that was lovely, although I think a pure-bred Irish is pretty cool in itself if you get the right one!
