Dundalk, County Louth, enjoys a great location, strategically located approximately midway between the two largest cities in Ireland, Belfast and Dublin.
It sits where the Castletown River flows into Dundalk Bay. The town is close to the border with Northern Ireland and equi-distant from Dublin and Belfast. It was in this beautiful Dundalk countryside in the bed of the Cooley Mountains, that the Farney Harriers first Working Dog show took place yesterday Sunday the 15th July 12.
For a first show, the organisation was impeccable. Showing and racing went without a hitch, and on top of it all, God blessed us with beautiful weather. There was a very large attendance, both of Lurchers, Terriers, Whippets, Beagles and Pets. All rings were full most of the time. At one stage I counted 21 Lurchers in the Lurcher ring and 18 Whippet Dogs and 9 Whippet Bitches in the whippet classes. This is only a small sample of the amount of Dogs and their owners and families that attended on the day. Every time I looked at the terrier ring it was full also. There was Pony rides, and excellent food, Toilet facilities and a PA System you would die for. It was nice to meet old friends, but it was also nice to meet up with so many new ones.
There was Lurcher, Terrier, Beagle, and Whippet men there from:
Lurgan/Newtownards/Portadown/Annaghmore/Antrim/Bangor and Belfast. All great Canine people and great show supporters.Them Dublin Fellows are all great lads, and I had a great days banter with them. The craic was good, and all just out to enjoy the show, and enjoy it they did. Dublin DESI, Patterdale 666 and Lurcher330 and all the rest of the new Dublin people I met, thank you for your friendship yesterday. Hope to meet up with you all shortly again, maybe Birr Castle. Its nice to see such good humour and such nice people at this show yesterday. A great astomphere. The IWTF stand was there at the side of the terrier ring, and was visited by many people.
The showing started at approximately 12.30.

And Finally, many thanks to Geraldine Barry who was the master of cermonies yesterday. Geraldine you carried out your duties with superb effeciency and kept everybody well informed with all the classes etc, and well what can I say of the PA system. It was the best I have heard at any dog Show I have attended, and I have been at many over the years. A great thought and very successful. With so many dogs in the rings, the judges did a good job. Not always any easy task. Thanks for that. For a first show, The Farney Harriers club committe done a great job. You carried this show off without a hitch. I noticed every committe member had their own job, and they carried it out to the highest standard and made the day so successful and enjoyable for everybody young and old. I was most impressed with the lure operator. Went without a hitch. Just would like to see all dogs muzzled when racing at next years show. As the show was advertised on the "Hunting Life" as no muzzles need, I do not agree with it. There was no scratches with the racing fortunately, but prevention is better than cure. And finally we all have to thank the owner of the land Mr Gerald Mc Ardle. Without you Gerald the show would not of been possible. A big thank you on behalf of the show goers and the Farney Harriers club and committe for your generosity. A brilliant show and I am already looking forward to the next one. Well done organisers and committe.
