How much tripe do you give each day? the pkt is 400g, I believe you don't mix it with kibble.

At 12 wks Ella weighed 10 1/4 lb, at 20 wks she weighed only 11 lb, she is petite, seems in proportion, has a delicate head, is full of life and I'm sure there is some discrepancy between the 'on table' baby scales and the 'stand on floor' scales at our vets.

I think she will turn out to be only a small little lady but I want her to be healthy, she's not very food-focused, loves the minced beef, tripe and chicken wings, but I know she gollops the wings down as this week she vomitted a lot after chewing and old rotten bulb out of the garden and there was a 1 cm long jagged piece of chicken bone in it , blessing in disguise I guess, as this is what the vets are saying they always do laps for :b

Hi Julie

Think your Ella & my Ellie are from the same mould!!

Ellie reminds me of a string bean & like your Ella not very food focused. I've tried the tripe & bought the square block & gave her half a block at a time.

Tried mixing the biscuit with it but forget she wasn't having any of that, then she just refused to eat the tripe as well so i gave up.

Her favourites now & that she will eat & she really seems to be bodying up are: Roast chicken & Savoury rice, Roasted Breast of Lamb, cooked liver & heart mixed with cooked pasta, she also likes peas, carrots & cabbage & every morning has buttered toast!!.

Good luck with Ella & know how frustrating a picky eater can be.

They won't starve! Have you tried a complete food Nutro puppy is very good.

Unfortunately as far as Ellie is concerned ANY kind of complete diet (& trust me i've tried the lot on her) is obviously poisonous revolting dried yuk that doesn't even deserve sniffing!!

You can leave it down all day but she would rather go on hunger strike.

I must say i am not a fan of complete diets & find a lot scour the coats of the Ig's so i tend to stick to fresh cooked meat, veg, pasta & rice.

YES YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!! She looked at her complete diet, looked at the IG's bowls & the rest is history.

Now MADAM ELLIE does NOT do complete diet, forget it.

Tonight she dined on fresh steak, liver pasta & veg (which she ate heartily i might add!)

Seriously tho, we cook every night for the IG's & guess its only natural that Ellie smells it & thinks I AM NOT EATING THAT DRIED STUFF!!

She adores their spaghetti bolognese once a week too.

Normal day:

Breakfast - Bowl of fresh Goats Milk, Warm buttered toast with scrambled egg & grated cheese.

Lunch : Roast chicken, veg & savoury rice

Dinner : Steak/Lamb/ Liver/ Mince or Heart with pasta, veg, potato & small amount of mixer biscuit.

Midnight snack to see her thru: Bowl of fresh goats milk & Bowl of IAMS (IAMS still there in morning!!)

Spoilt...........NEVER, but i must say the roast chicken smells real good as me & mum are tucking into our beans on toast!! :(

Thanks for the replies, not glad others have fussy dogs but glad to know we're not alone, Ella's brother has ox heart so we're going to get one tomorrow, YUMMY and we just got lots of free samples of various complete foods at the puppy class tonight, I agree tho' these Ella/ies are too posh to crunch ! :- "

There are so many theories, do/don't let them graze, don't offer too many choices, it's just going to take us a bit longer to find out what she's happy with then we'll stick to that but I don't want her to be malnourished in her early years as that won't stand her in for much in later life.

Her coat is the most beautiful soft, silky fur ever so we must be doing something right

You do what's right for your own dog, they're like people all different & have their own wee quirks ours are all fed on Iams except when the bitch was in whelp & nursing then they got Eukanuba puppy,& gradually weaned on to Iams pup & big healthy pups they were too,we have min poodles too so it's just easier to feed a complete diet & know that they're getting all the minerals & vits that they need.

Plus with us having quite alot of dogs there is less end product & not as much.

So it's also slightly out of lazyness too on my behalf as not asmuch cleaning up! :x

I probably have no right to give any advice at all; I can turn a ravenous eater into an anorexic over night. But then again I had so many bad eaters over the years.

OK to start with, is your puppy really too skinny, or is she just not as fat as you think she ought to be? Pups go through the skinny gangly stage, when they loose their puppy fat until they fill up and mature. My Bess who was on the skinny side most of her life is only just now (5 and half years old) getting really covered up, actually I have to watch her not to get too fat.

I find that after giving the same food for few days my dogs just get sick of it, so I do alternate different kinds; chicken necks, lamb flaps, raw ox heart, or casserole made with ox tongue (they for some reason do not want it raw) with pasta, wheat germ and veggies. What is not eaten within half an hour gets put away, or it will attract flies.

If your puppy really is just not eating; try Periactin. It is available over the counter in chemist as a antihistamine. Give half an tablet about an hour before feeding time (once a day) after about a week if she is eating, you can see if giving it only every other day will still work. Then go to twice a week, or give some only if she stops to eat again. But most dogs, once they start eating will continue to eat.

Periactin makes people very drowsy, but I have never noticed any such effect on my dogs, and it is recommended for both dogs and cats. It is also very cheap here, about $ 4 (less than 2pounds) for 100 tablets.

Anyway i think it is normal and healthy for pups to be on slim side until they are about 18 months or 2 years, when they start filling up as they mature. But many Whippets are not really matured until they reach about 3 years. You would not want 12 years old child to have a body of 35 years old, would you?

I also think that many people expect their dogs to eat lot more than they really need to.

:luck: Lida

:D Ella now weighs in at 7.2 kg = 15 3/4 lb , she's 23 weeks old now, and she's enjoying what we give her, she likes the liver cake for treats that we found a recipe for on here, she is so cute and has such a lovely temperament, we're so glad we got a whippet. :D

THANKS EVERYONE ON K9
