Has everyone who signed the electronic petition about the random use (and misuse) of fireworks outwith organised displays received their e-mail response yet? I got this today:

Although a number of people have called for a ban on the use of fireworks by the public, the Government believes that to do so would be very unwelcome by the population at large as an undue restriction on the freedom to enjoy traditional celebrations and family firework parties (weddings and birthdays etc), the great majority of which are conducted in a safe and sensible manner.

However recognising concerns over the misuse of fireworks and their effects on animals, the Government introduced in 2004 a comprehensive package of measures designed to promote safety and tackle anti-social or inconsiderate use of fireworks.

They include:

banning the possession of fireworks in public places by the under 18 age group;

making retailers responsible for ensuring that they do not sell fireworks to under 18s;

introducing a curfew on the use of fireworks;

placing a maximum decibel limit on the largest fireworks available to consumers; and

developing the licensing system to encourage seasonal-only sales (thereby reducing the frequency of noise in the approach to the November season).

We believe these measures have substantially reduced the effects of misuse of fireworks.

Oh well, looks like we can look forward to people letting off fireworks whenever they like this year again :(

Yes recieved it - bloody government haven't got the balls to do anything constructive :rant:

Never seen such a lot of twaddle in my life. What happened to the 'freedom to enjoy' such pastimes as hunting. I am sure far more people and animals (of all kinds) are adversely affected by fireworks, however they are used, than they are by foxhunting. :rant:

Got mine too.

This seems very incongruous to me...

fireworks are allowed for family firework parties [weddings and birthdays]...

BUT only if they are in November I presume :angry:

This looks like you can easily buy fireworks in November but they can be let of in Dec, Jan,Feb, Mar, April,May, Jun,Jul, Aug,Sep,& even Oct. :rant: :rant: :rant: :rant:

Some stupid :rant: :rant: let a couple of bloody great bangers off a few hours ago & my poor Hebe has only just relaxed enough to lie down & go to sleep.

So I would fully support anything that would limit the use of these awful items of torture to animals :(

The ones tonight (some idiots birthday/wedding/whatever :rant: ) weren't even the really mega loud ones but it still caused a few hours of upset for Hebe.

I say BAN THE LOT OF THEM but as that's not likely to happen, then organised displays on Nov 5th only.

Now then....who's going to vote me in as Prime Minister then?? :lol: :lol:

Received mine :rant: :rant: :rant: :rant: what sort of government have we got :( spineless springs to mind :rant:

Interesting thought ! There is a shop in Maldon in Essex which only sells fireworks.

They are open during normal trading hours Every day. :oops:

This govenment is only interested in who they will get the most votes from - banning hunting, in my opinion, was not about helping animals. :rant:
