just heard fluke been bad in scotland, spent a few nights in vets hope she,s ok the heats getting to everything .hope everthings alright with her

Yes-Megs been a very poorly girl...She almost died-the vets were surprised too that she's pulled through.

Steve took them to the beach where we live near Morecambe Friday morning

Most unlike Meg who doesn't normally pick bits/scraps up from the beach-she did and ate something before Steve could make her stop.

At tea time she brought her food back but ate it again...We put it down to the hot weather etc.

Friday night we travelled to Scotland.

All was ok till Saturday during the night when she brought up lots and lots of 'fluid like sick'..

We kept an eye on her Sunday, kept her cool and made sure she was drinking hoping it would pass-she was drinking loads of water but couldn't keep it down.

We took her a short few yards to relieve herself and she fell over..

Luckily the vets wasn't far away..she was dying in my arms as we drove there.

They said she must have had something extremely toxic-and treat her for rat poison-giving her vitamin K

Her veins had collapsed making it difficult for them to get a drip in and she was now passing blood in her urine and very loose stools.

Megs mouth was freezing cold, she had red patches and blisters on her top gums and her eyes were glazed..she wasn't responding to her name.

Meg was kept on a drip for 5 days in the vets..her glucose/protein levels were very low-but she slowly picked up.

We were allowed to visit her each day for an update-she was very lethargic.

Its amazing that she's survived the ordeal..whatever it was-a full diagnosis couldn't be given.

We are home now and she's quite happy- though her full appetite hasn't returned yet.Meg only wants chicken and refused cheese! which isn't normal for her.

She now weighs 24lb... she was 28lb when we left for Scotland

Not a brilliant start to her retirement but touch wood..things will get better.

Thank you to all who helped and showed concern in Scotland

Sorry to be so long winded..but I thought if I put it all down.. it may help someone else, as many go off to the beach at this time of year with their dogs.

I must add though that this is the first incident we have had in 10 years-almost daily beach walking.

poor meg hope she's back to her old self soon :huggles:

Funny you say this as we live further up on the West Coast of Cumbria. A neighbour of mine has had trouble like this with her dog after taking him for a swim on Allonby beach. I stopped mine swimming in the sea at Workington beach, (in this hot weather we've had its been a godsend to live on the coast) on Friday after reading that our resident Dolphin can pass on bad infections to dogs and humans.

About 3 weeks ago Ernie had a bad dose of the runs after going to the beach but i just put it down to him probably drinking the salty water.

Sorry to hear about Fluke, makes you wonder if something has been spilled.

Who do we complain to about this to check out the water quality?

What a terrible time this must have been for you :( good luck for a full and speedy recovery to Meg :huggles: :luck: :luck: :luck:

What a horrible experience for you all, :luck: to Fluke for a speedy recovery.

Poor Meg :huggles: - hope she's better soon :luck:

I am glad to hear that Meg is on the way to recovery I could see how much the family were worried about her and with their efforts as caring owners and Meg's inner strenth she should now be able to enjoy a long retirement with the family and us racers can remember her for the top class bitch that she was on the race track.

Thank God Meg is still the supreme athlete she always was,her conditioning and strength of heart and character pulled her through as usual, she is a winner and probably always will be,a credit to her family, and a legend
