Milo is now 6 1/2 months old and weighs 11.4 kilos. He is about 19" high. I usually feed him raw meat in the morning and evening mixed with a handful of wholemeal biscuits which he woolfs down. He usually has a 400g pack divided into two meals. I am not sure if I am feeding him the right amount? Does his weight seem ok, is he a little on the small side? Not having had whippets before I am unsure and haven't fed raw food before.

He will sneak food at any opportunity and always seems to be searching, not sure if this is just a whippet trait

I have tried on a few occasions to get him onto complete dry food but he eats it for a day and then leaves it completely. I like to feed him what he loves so have decided to stick to the raw minced food but just not sure on the amount.

Any advice appreciated thanks.

Have you got a recent picture of your dog that you could post? Then the more experienced Whippet people may be able to tell you if it looks the correct weight. (just a suggestion :- " ) I would think its quite hard to tell by figures alone??

Just in my very limited Whippet experience - Frankie would eat more than my Dobermann if i let him, he is very greedy (and my pup Holly is rapidly following suit! ) I think judging by the stories we get on here, most Whippets are pretty greedy. However, i'd much rather them clear their bowls than be fussy eaters. If your dog is happy on the raw, why change?

I agree if you have a pic that would help because what is the correct weight for one whippet may not be right for another.

My two pure whippets are 21" tall and one weighs 17kgs and the other weighs 15.8kgs. They both look trim but not skinny and well covered and yet not fat.

I think some dogs can carry more weight, without it looking odd, than others.

hope that makes sense.

does Frankie like bananas? Or raw carrot? Or uncooked potato? Is this a family Stormburst trait (Juley?)?! Or are all whippets pilferers when it comes to food that's not their own!!!

He does like banana's, carrots, in fact i've never given him any fruit or veg that he doesn't like  He has fruit and veg every morning as part of his brekkie. Im wise to his theiving now, so he doesn't manage to steal much these days :D

I can't advise on how much, but I would add a bit more variety to the diet. Just raw meat and biscuits probably isn't as balanced a diet as it could be. Add some pulped veg too to ensure your whippet is getting the correct vitamins, and some raw meaty bones (chicken wings if you feel comfortable with this...lots of folk on here feed them) for calcium. Add the odd egg each week too. Meat every day (especially beef or red meat) can be a bit high in protein and can stress the liver, have a day or so in the week where you feed no meat, and just veg.

I'm not an expert by any means but I have been reading up a bit on raw diets, so am quoting what I can remember from my findings.

His weight seems to me to be pretty right for his height, he will grow another inch or so two over the next couple of months. Most pups get leggy and skinny in this stage, just as human teenagers do, and then fill in as they mature. Which happens by about 2 - 2 1/2 years.
