Hi all,

I have been feeding Obi (7 months old JRT) raw food for a while and he loved it when we started but recently he has been really fussy and is refusing to eat until the evening and even then he doesn't eat much. I have made a list of the foods that he likes but he seems to change his mind on what he likes and what he doesn't.
He likes duck necks (on the bone) and that seems to be all he is interested in apart from treats.
I really dont want to change his food because I like to know what is food and with raw it's much easier.
He is completely normal in himself and is happy and playful, he doesn't show any signs of Illness.

Any advice is very much appreciated.

Liz

He is at just the right age when the huge puppy growth spurt slows, and also he is teething, which is probably why the duck necks are such a success. I'd recommend you simply offer him a smaller amount of food for now, and if/when he seems to want more, then you can increase by a small amount at the next meal. Scale down the treats, as, just with small children and too many sweets/cakes/biscuits, these usually appeal more than real food. It's deceptive how little food terriers need - ours when adult had one heaped tablespoon of food a day, plus a raw bone/one raw chicken wing, and despite being very active working dogs, stayed a healthy size and didn't need any more.

How many times each day do you feed him?
I would suggest that you stop the treats and only feed him his daily rations of raw too. His food consumption requirements will now probably start to slow down and less will be required.
I can say no more than Hemlock has already said.

Cool things to chew can help if he has sore gums - maybe put the duck necks in the freezer for a while before giving them. Wetting a towel, wringing it out tightly and then freezing it can also help.
