Gentle Joe came into the care of the Oldies Club after his owner sadly had to move to a flat where he was not allowed to keep a dog. Joe is a very distinguished 12 year old retired racing greyhound. We are told he has lived with a cat in the past and his fosterer will be cat testing him shortly to check his reaction to other moggies. Joe enjoys the company of other sighthounds.

His fosterer says:

” This boy is a dream, he is loving, affectionate, gentle and loves attention, he is a chunky solid greyhound though not overweight with a kink in his tail, which must have been damaged in the past. He is loving the garden and the company of the other greyhounds and will happily share his bed.

He walks well on lead and is quite good off lead.”

Joe has been neutered, and also has had seven teeth removed, which should leave him feeling much more comfortable. Joe has a grade 1-2 heart murmur, but this is quite common in greyhounds and should not cause him any problems: it’s being monitored at present to make sure it’s not getting worse.

Joe is a little stiff and arthritic, but has improved with gentle walks and medication. Joe will need to continue taking glucosamine and pain killers to manage these problems. Joe also limps on his right foreleg. We are trying to work out if this is due to his arthritis or a previous injury.

We were told by his previous owner that Joe has inflammatory bowel disease: so far he has not shown any sign of this, but it would probably be safest to keep him on the James Wellbeloved food he is used to and be cautious about medications taken by mouth.

If you’d like to enquire about Joe, please refer to our Adoption Procedures for information about the adoption process. You can then contact an Oldies Club rehoming co-ordinator as follows:

Email: rehome@oldies.org.uk

Telephone: 0844 586 8656

Joe can be rehomed anywhere in the UK, subject to a satisfactory home visit, but note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet him.

Joe has now been cat-tested and showed no interest at all :D

There have been absolutely no signs of IBS since he's been with us, but we would recommend he continues to be fed on James Wellbeloved as that seems to suit him.

He is a truly lovely boy who is in foster with several other hounds and has impeccable manners with them all.

Dear old Joe has now gone off to his new home. Be happy Joe! :D
