hello,

how many show folk walk their dogs everyday, how long, how far and how many times a day. Or do you have other ways of getting your dog fit for the show ring. The show ring and the race track need differing training methods, but I wanted to know from the experts how they attchieved that fitness needed for long days at the show.

regards

Mike

I exercise mine twice a day. Half an hour-ish in the mornings and a minimum of 45 minutes in evening, depending on daylight hours and weather!! We will go out for longer in the evenings in the summer and at weekends depending on shows!

We only have a short bit on the lead before they are let off in the fields at the bottom of our road and then it is all free running.

I personally walk mine roughly 3 to 4 miles a day, i drove in the car to measure distance and my walk is just over a mile and a half there and the same back :- " obviously!!

(Me and Skippy sometimes have issues over this and try to outdo each other by how far we walk!)

3 times a week we climb up to the cliff tops and they roam free and that walk is double the distance. I show Diamond but being a racer as well she gets gallops on the beach twice a week along with Genie (non ped racer) and the greyhounds.

I have just been to the vets with Diamond and asked for her honest opinion on her weight and she said that she was perfect and looked extremely fit, but saying that she doesnt have the stamina for a long show day and after she loses anything up to 2lb.

I was once told that my dog shouldnt be off the lead if i want to show her, RUBBISH!! There is nothing more that she enjoys better than a bloody good run, thats what whippets do best and i think it makes her a more alert, fit and healthy looking dog for it. Fair enough if i just had her by my side ALL the time she would put on weight but it would make her downright miserable as she enjoys her bunny hunting (w00t)

I will never give up giving her long walks and running as she gets more enjoyment racing than showing. But we WILL persevere in the ring

Sorry for a bit of a rant in your thread Mike :huggles:

I walk about a mile to the heath Whippies have half an hour free running up there then a mile back. Like Dessie more in the summer. If the weather is bad we go around the Cemetary which is about 200 acres with tarmac roads

Perky wont just run or chase things so she goes to the football field and has half an hour with the ball. Wont chase a frisby because she got ahead of it one day and it hit her behind the ears (w00t) She wouldnt go near it then, thought the frisby was alive and had hit her on purpose

We have been walking round the cemetary lately thinking it would be quiet and peaceful, and whilst it is, it is a haven for squirrels, Sparky is in heaven (wrong choice of word perhaps) imagining he can catch the lot.

We walk about 30 minutes in the morning and same again in the evening, if the field is empty he has a run but otherwise we walk the long way home and it takes about 45 minutes.

god they are whimps arn't they  Rosa wouldn't play with tennis balls after one bounced funny and clonked her on the side of the face :D

i like to break my walks up, during the week their morning walk consists of taking them each out individually for a one mile constructive road walk, i find that this helps to teach them to be steady on the lead and i can concentrate on their individual problems or weaknesses and asses their movement and soundness, (the devil pup has been pacing in the ring recently so i'm trying to get him out of the habit)

then in the afternoon they go out in pairs or three's depending on which dogs they are for a bit of mooching in the woods, they can set their own pace and look for squirrels and westies to chase

in the summer i will be taking them on longer morning road walks (about 3 miles)out with the bike

 weekends tend to be hectic, it's all out together in one big bunch for a hike round the resevoir

and if it's raining i've got a treadmill

Ronan loves running with his ball on a rope, holding it by the rope so that the ball keeps swinging back and forth and hitting him in the chops! He thinks that is very funny!!

I enjoy getting the dogs out,

But here is a sexest remark, it funny to see that it is all the women that have replied with answers of walking miles in the morning and after and night in multi walks etc....

Who goes out to work? and all that?

Im gonna give my kennel maid a dame good whipping for slacking off and not walking to this extent. I will set her alarm clock for 5am and dock her pay till the job gets done to a higher standard. You just cant get staff these days!!!

I work about 35-40 hours a week but weird hours so fit the walking in between. Id quite like a treadmill for the dogs for when its really wet etc.

Many thanks for all your replies, It is interesting to see just how many different methods are used, but in most of the replies the main method of getting fit seems to be the age old method of free running to get fit. I was told by an old timer many years ago when I was 12 yrs old that to get the best out of a dog he has to have free running. The 5 miles fast walk only tightened pasterns and trimed nails down. I was surprised. But over the years I have followed this man's advice and have won many races. I now take my lot on a 3 mile fast gait me on my wheel chair and the Whippets gaiting at the side. Then a good gallop in the field to finih them off. When we get home they all get a good massage to stop cramps and lactic acid building up . I have used radiant B for this for about 30 yrs could be longer. It sure stinks though.

May your God be with you

Oh...ive only just read this MARK!!!

Seems most of us WOMEN actually fit our jobs around our whippies. Theres nothing worse than having a good walk and a good run with kids hanging around as most whippets seem to always make a beeline for kids. Mine go out after the kids have gone school, nice and peaceful with just oldies about with their even more aged Collies (w00t)

OH gets up early to take his out, and if he paid me then yes i would get up at 5am!!

Glad to see you're back, it's been awfully quiet without you.
