ok so ive been doing a little ring training at home ,, going ok i guess,

well been busy , new pup , new job , christmas, 3 kids etc etc :- "

though seeing as brains here had a bright idea to put kobi in at the deep end and his first show is man ch id better get some REAL training in (w00t)

full of good intentions i set out to ring craft :))

kobi traveeld well , and made himself known to EVERYTHING in sight :b

barked at the rotty when it wouldnt play with him ,, wanted to chase the other dogs down the mat instead of standing still ,, thought it may be a good idea to TRY and jump off the table ( dam mummy had hold of me tooo tight so i couldnt do it  )

bribed him with minin smarties as the ' special liver bits' id cooked him were ignored !!

and still he wanted to play with the others

and to top it all , the club is now closed untill 18th jan !!!

ah well , we get one more go before the real thing

(w00t) Good luck Sharon :luck: :luck: I'm sure it will be fine on the day

i know its early days and he is a baby ,, its a good job i dont take this showing thing too seriousley (w00t)

one thing i have found is he will keep still with treats etc but then when the judge wants to look in his mouth and i move my hand away he is looking for the treat and wont keep still yet if i dont use treats he wont keep still

any tips ????????????????????????????????

Good luck, keep practising!! I can't believe the liver didn't go down well, my dog use to love it!!! The only thing that made her stand still! :luck: :luck: :))

Try getting her use to you holding the treat away from her mouth when shes standing, then she wont be looking for it when the judge looks in her mouth. What do i know though, i've only shown a Dobe and Staffies!! :)

Oh well it's early days, patience is a virtue, by the 18th of January you should be rearing to go. :luck: SUE

Don't try and teach everything at once. Teach things separately.

Does kobi have quiet moments - eg sitting on your lap or next to you at night watching tele etc?

In his quiet moments begin stroking your hand over his head beginning from nose to the back. Just do the stroking for the first couple of times. Then one night start saying 'show' as you gently lift his lips as you run your hand over his head. do that for a while. Then start slipping your other hand under his chin and saying 'show' as you lift his lips and continue to run your hand over his head. Then when he's comfortable with this start lifting his head up and saying show and peeling the lips back further and pausing so that you can see his teeth. Don't use treats in any of this process. Once he's got the idea over say a week or so that 'show' means you're going to look in his mouth - try doing it non-chalantly when he's just standing beside you. Just reach down and start stroking his head then say show and look in his mouth while he's standing. If he gets that right then start standing him on a table (no treats and not trying to stack him) just get him to just stand there (wait til he calms down if you have to) and then do the head stroke and the "show" and the look in the mouth. Once he's got it with you, then get other people to walk up to him on the table and start stroking him - you say 'show' and get them to look in his mouth.

Make your "learning to stack with treats training" on the ground not on the table for the moment. And do the mouth training on the table just with him standing still (not necessarily stacked) and no treats and don't try to do both in the same session. eg stacking practice morning and afternoon and mouthing practice at night.

Once he's got the stacking on the ground right and also the mouthing bit right then start to combine the two.

Up on the table, stack, show the bait, give the bait (only a little tiny piece so it doesn't take ages for him to chew), then do the head stroke and the mouthing with the word show, preferably with someone else doing the mouthing for you.

I usually do this with all my whippet pups that I keep for myself. It's a slow process but it usually works. I didn't do it with Rob's Husky (because she doesn't come upstairs into the lounge room) and she is a terror with the judges looking in her mouth.

They have to get used to the hand coming over the top of their head.

:) That sounds good Lana, im going to do that as Linky is  for looking in his mouth and  on the table.

Practice makes perfect so they say (w00t)

Wise words as always from Lana :* Little and often is my way . Once they start to get bored you can go `backwards ` imo ;)

Just a thought, but when Kobi has a bit more practise on his own, why don't you give it a go with a few of your families / friends dogs present??

As your ringcraft has broken up for christmas this could be a good way of getting Kobi use to standing still while other dogs are around. The other dogs don't have to be standing, just being in the same room is a start. It might sound a bit daft but this is something i use to do with my Dobermann. I would stand her, while a Staffie, Lurcher and Jack Russell looked on!! I think it helped her get use to having others around? ;) ;)

thanks for that , never thought of doing the 2 diffrent ways :b

will heed your great advice , thanks

he is fine looking at his mouth etc he just fidgets :teehee:

he is a baby and i am taking it very slowly ( prehaps a little too slow :b )

see if there are any christmas and new year companion shows near you that woulld let you take him Not For Competition or some other 'doggy' events that he could go and watch where you could practice keeping him calm,

i'd also sugest getting him to the show as early as you can so you can get him settled in before he enters the ring,

i'll be there as well getting my devil pup settled so if you would like i could be the pretend judge going over him before he goes in, just for that last minute practice
