Just wondering ifm anyone could give me some info on the KC good citizen dog scheme thingy-ma-jig!? :teehee:

Ive heard snippets about it and saw abit of it at crufts but i dont know exactly what it entails and how you go about it, etc etc. I believe there are 3 levels...Gold, silver and bronze. Im quite interested in what ive heard so far and maybe would like to give it a go in my spare time alongside my showing.

Im sure ive heard some k9ers on here do it but im not sure who so i thought id post this in general disscussion! :)

The Kennel Club should be able to tell you all you need to know, including sending you a list of classes local to you. Their website is www.the-kennel-club.org.uk, click on the 'training' button.

Good luck!

We've done The Good Citizen Scheme with Chloe - she got up to gold (we find it hard to believe sometimes  )

Loads of training classes do the awards, im sure you'll find one local to you. It's really good fun and it obviously helps a lot with behaviour and obedience.

There is also the Puppy Foundation award, which you do before bronze and is a good starter for the pups!

Im sure you'll enjoy it and i thoroughly recommend giving it a go. :)

i have always done these awards with dogs over the years and with a lurcher(greyhound x collie) and border collie i had years ago got very far...even went on to agility etc....

however :- " training gypsy (who is a whippet) has been difficult because although she is very intelligent it is not the same as the collies....imo collies love to please and gypsy couldnt care less (w00t)

casper (who is also a whippet) has been impossible and i have give up! -_-

i have yet to find out with monty...he starts his puppy award next week

my experience with my dogs are obviously represent only a very small percentage of whippets versus other breeds and im sure lots of people will reply to say their whippets do high level awards all the time o:) :p

that is very true o:) ...now though if there was an award for sleeping then he would win gold !!!! -_- -_- -_-

 Just to add, that in the group i went to there were only one or two Collies. There was a wide range of different breeds, including a Greyhound that got Gold and also 2 whippets. Every breed had it's strong and weak points but they were all able to take part and work towards the awards.

Don't be put off by not having a Collie. Chloe is a Dobermann and certainly not the easiest dog to train, if we managed it so can you.

sorry if i appereared to be suggesting it was only collies good at this...that is not what i meant....and you are right there are a range of dogs at my training club too.

i was just talking about my personal experience ....

i think you should defo give it a go

good luck  :luck:

It's good fun and good training for both dog and owner (you have to answer questions on dog care etc as well as put your dog through his paces!)

Polly got her bronze and silver and is ready to go for her gold but I got sick and have not been able to go to classes for many months now, so don't know if she'll ever get the chance. She did it perfectly in rehearsal though

Good luck if you do decide to go for it. :luck:

Bean and Woody have both got their Silvers. I'm still not quite sure how Bean managed to do it, he had 3 weeks to get ready for it after he passed the bronze at a dog show. For the leadwork and car bit I did it with both of them at the same time.

Woody was quite easy to train. He'll do anything for food. We did do some agility and he was much, much better than me. :b What he didn't like was things like speed sits. They would worry him as he couldn't understand why he was being to sit again just after standing up. Collies just get switched on by such things but it put him off.

He also didn't like some of the big bouncy dogs in the class. Still they learned to leave him alone (w00t) .

The Good Citizen is good fun to do and something a bit different. I have trained two Whippies, my Joshie and his mum, Jade, to pass the Gold test and somehow Bradley has passed his silver.

(w00t) My boxer has just passed her bronze.

God only knows how she passed because she's a complete mare most of the time and if you ask her to heel when out she just gives a derisive snort and looks at you as if you're demented

thanks for the replies

i didnt realise it was that popular. Id really like to give it a go, IF i can find the time to put the work in aswell as going to ringcraft in the week, which is priority. I think i'll contact the KC and find out the nearest one in my area and when they hold the training classes.

thanks again. :)

My older lurcher has bronze & silver & my Bedlington has bronze. Now if he can do it anyone can, the bronze is very basic, the hardest thing is a stay of 2 minutes(it feels like about an hour)

Go for it, it's fun once its over :)

It does seem to be never ending doesn't it, the down stay in the gold is even worse, saying that Joshua and Jade just went to sleep!! Well the test was at 10 pm and I did an hours work with them first!! The send to bed was easy (well Whippies love bed!!). The stop wasn't too bad either.

With Jade (Joshies mum) I didn't even do the training, she had had her silver for a while and they were doing the gold test that night and asked if I wanted to have a go with her, what did I have to lose? She sailed through and got everything perfect, she was the only one who passed!! Also she was 8 years old at the time and had never done any obedience training before.

I may try for Bradley's Gold when he has learnt to stand still in the show ring :- " !!
