:( :( :( This is Gemma, the last photo i have of her as she had to be pts early sunday moring after suffering from severe liver damage. Although my parents looked after her for the past 4 years, i originally owned her for the first 6, so i am so devastated she is no longer with us :( :( :(

I originally rescued her from a place where i went dog training with another Lurcher. Windy Ways sanctuary in Macclesfield had taken her in after she was rescued from a gypsy camp heavily pregnant and in a very neglected condition living rough. She had her litter of a very mixed bag of pups, but the sanctuary was full so the boarding kennels where i went training took her on for a while. Each week i would go training and the owner always tried to persuade me to have her but my ex-hubby wouldn't allow it so there she stayed living in a very basic kennel, being allowed out in the day to run with his pack of mixed breeds. He would open the kennel and out she would burst, run round the field a few times then run back to her kennel knackered!! :p She wouldn't feed out of a bowl so there was always food all over the floor and a small piece of vetbed for her to lie on too in the corner. I eventually persuaded my ex hubby to let me have her over bonfire night as she was such a nervous dog and he agreed :D Funnily enough she never went back to the kennels ;) may09_068.jpg

She turned out to be such a sweet natured, quiet and kind pet, never ever put a paw out of place her only problem was her terrible nerves sometimes, very fearful of strangers but this gradually improved over the years and being a very fussy eater. It took several months for her to eat out of a dog bowl too. We used to take her racing and simulated coursing where she forgot all about her fears and became a mad leaping yapping Lurcher, she ADORED chasing the lure 8) Her racing name was Santas Little Helper as she used to look just like Homer Simpson's Greyhound! :p Tried her at agility but was too fearful of all the other dogs and people, but at the end of a training session i would get her out of the car and let her have a go, and she really enjoyed herself. She was never the most energetic of Lurchers, she liked to run a few laps of a field then go home, or if i made her go for long walks she would lag behind, head down looking totally fed up!! Trying to get her to follow me on my bike was a total no no, she would just refuse to follow me!!!!!!!!!

After my son was born, as super and patient and totally trustworthy as she was with him, she never enjoyed the change of lifestyle and lots of kids running round, she would leg it upstairs for some peace and quiet -_-

In May 2005 i fostered a manic Lurcher who my parents took on but couldn't cope with, so until i could find a home for the foster, my parents asked for one of mine to help me out as i was struggling with 5 dogs in a tiny house. They took Gemma and there she stayed ever since!!! She just seemed to thrive in their more laid back lifestyle, gentle country strolls, warm days lounging around on the allotments... I would never have dreamed of re homing Gemma to anyone but my parents gave her the best home i could have wished for o:) River_Mersey_006.jpg

So sorry for your loss :( She had a good life You and your parents did her proud

RIP Gemma :huggles:

On walks other dogs seemed to sense her nervous energy and often they would chase her aggressively, so she learned to run wide through trees and bushes to avoid them. I'll always remember one day some owners had stopped to talk to me then they shouted "wow a fox look!!!" and it was my Gem legging it through the trees...think they needed their eyes testing 8) :clown: gem_gucci_pillow.jpg

What a lovely tribute to a very special girl

Run free, Gemma xx

In her prime, here she is with her best buddy Holly who died tragically very young. When i think of Gem Gem and get upset i like to think she has found Holly over the Rainbow Bridge and they have each other for company and have fun playing together again like they used to do. Holly has been on her own for many years waiting :( :( :( bsfa1.jpg

bsfa.jpgApart from the routine stuff, she only ever went to the vet once in 10 years after a run in with a barbed wire fence. So her end has come very suddenly, on Wednesday evening she was very lethargic and sick several times during the night. After a day at the vets next day, many tests later she was found to have 70% liver damage and anaemia and the outlook was not good. All this time Gemma never wimpered, complained or was any trouble to anyone. The vet thought it was worth a shot at treating it and she did pick up by saturday she seemed much more herself. But sadly during the night she was sick again and collapsed in the garden first thing sunday and was unable to move all but her head (still no complaining :( ) Her body was too full of toxins and had given up, her look in her eyes told us she had had enough so we had to take her to the emergency vet. The worst of it all was my mum was away in Germany and never got to say goodbye to her beloved Gemmy. My dad has taken it so bad, he is an old fashioned man, not liking to show emotion but of all the dogs he has owned since childhood, Gemma totally took over his heart, i have never seen him care for a dog like he did her, he spoilt her rotten too

Goodbye Gemmy , can't believe you have gone :( :(
