My lurcher is very over enthusiastic when greeting visitors, he is getting better and not jumping up when we are out but still finds visitors very exciting. Whats the best way to teach him correct manners i.e. not to jump up and to listen to me when i tell him to stay back or go ahead and greet the person. He is just over a year old now so needs to be sorted.

any tips/ideas would be appreciated

thanks x

mine is exactly the same!

we give him the stay command and make him wait until the visitor has entered the house before he is allowed near them. if he is too excited he has to remain where he is until his energy level has dropped.

we keep him on a lead too so we can correct him using that instead of touching him. plus if he does bolt towards the visitor we can usually grab his lead and stop him too which is always handy :)

we ask the visitors to ignore him as well whilst he is like that so he knows that he wont get a fuss when he is in that excited state of mind.

he NEVER calmed down when we first had him and had to put him in his crate when we had visitors round as he just wouldnt give in.

the advise i have given you is what my trainer gave to me and its working for us.

my dog isnt quite there yet but we have him down to about 5 minutes before he realizes that being calm gets him a big fuss from the visitor!

hope that helps!

Good luck

Goldenbear has got some valid points but i like to add i like my lurchers to be happy dogs so dont mind them being glad to see folk but yes over excitement needs some work, when mine was young i got them to some packed car boots so they got used to crowds it worked well for mine... Best of luck..

Thank you very much for your help :) i agree lurchers are very happy dogs that just love people!
