I was in a stakes class the other day and thought, this is sewn up before we start, and it was!

Then I read in the dog paper that someone thought it would be a good idea to end all competition after the CC's were handed out.

I dont know about you but I think this would be an excellent idea.  This way we the ordinary exhibitor would not be spending thousands of pounds in entry fees feeding those (very) few who seem to be leeching off every show, even if they are not 'doing' something.

They seem to be a breed apart just swoping judging and groups at the top end.

Does this improve the individual breeds?

What type of show was this?

Stakes at Ch shows are often won by big-names and those of us lower down the ladder can feel cheated. The argument in favour of the 'names' is that often ! they do have the better dogs and experience in handling at top level can make a difference. The other side is at they win because of who they are. Neither argument can be validated. Within the racing world it is much clearer cut as to who wins.

One breed club has several Ch show judges on board. Of these 1 is a regular exhibitor at all breed open shows. 1 regularly shows but almost invariably at Ch shows. 1 occassionally shows only at Ch shows. 1 rarely shows but has a litter due so will start getting out again and 1 does not own the breed. All have their reasons for doing as they do and I do not argue with their decision(s).

I have spoken with exhibitors who are for or against Ch show judges showing at Open shows. For:- it supports the breed gives new judges a wider selection of quality dogs to go over and why not as it is their hobby. Against:- they are only trophy hunters, they only win because they are known, their dogs win and we can't (with a lower quality dog often enough IMHO) so they should stop.

As for judging ending after CC's what about Group and BIS?

Stakes classes often go on most of the day and these classes do clash with breed classes.

A point I don't like is when 'novelty' classes such as Blue and Black OR Racing OR Veteran is held after the Open class which is when the CC should be done IMNSHO

I  only refer to general ch shows not breed shows, I am under no illussions about my Whippets ??? and I can never imagine having one that would ever be ready for a puppy stakes class!!

I was just in an adult stakes at a ch show and the chap next to me said 'we should get this easy enough' with what I would consider to be an inferior dog.( I have seen him with very good dogs) sure enough he did win it easy.  I am not prone to sour grapes as anyone would say, it was just the artical in the dog press seemed to make good sense.  In the US breed classes are rushed through because they feel the group is the thing to be in, well thats ok but does all that group and best in show stuff improve the breeds or is it just jobs for the boys.

Karen My opinion for what it is worth!!

I believe that when well known people show if they have good dogs they should win, if there are better dogs being shown they should win!!!

It all boils down to the judge having the ba**s to place a less well known person first.

:D  I agree with what you say Claire, you got it spot on there!   :D
