Im sure most will know my wee lad Gary can't read very well. He's just went into p4. We (myself & School) have been trying to gain his confidence with reading as Gary would look at works and say ( I can't do it). Well he's now got level A in reading (I know most kids get it a P2), But this is a very big accievement (sp) for Gary :) He now know's he can read and myself , the family and the school are giving the wee man loads of praise as confidence is all he needs

The school is taking it easy with Gary (reading) as they dont want to undo the good they (we) have done  Taking the next stage up at his time

Im so proud of him as it's been a very tough 2 years , just to get him to even try and read words, never mind books, but he's now picking a book up and reading it at home (w00t) , a big change in him :huggles:

Anyone else out there, who has a child with a learning need, Dont give up, it will take time, but once they get some confidence, they get there in the end

well done!thats a great achievement. have you tried him with some books that are popular for kids like harry potter etc?

Gary does not watch the tv  , he's an outside boy :) ,,he loves motorbikes and has book's on them, but still wont try and look at them, never mind read them

I leave books about the livingroom, easy ones, and also magazines, he will pick one up now and try to read it (w00t) a very big step for him :D . We cant push him to read, just leave the tools laying about and Gary is now taking the bate (on his terms) and it's working

Gary is getting a quad bike from Santa as Santa told him if he tired very hard to read he would get a nice outside toy for Christmas

Gary thinks he's getting a swing (the outside toy), but he will get the quad as we have a nice farmer to let him use his land

Im so proud of him as I knew he could do it with a wee push in the right direction and the School showed us how to do that

Thats great news Susan, you must be so proud, well done Gary  , keep up the good work

What an encouraging story. I always find that seeing children acieve what they find the hardest a real inspiration. It's frightening how many secondary children I teach who can barely write their name yet alone read text that is put in front of them. What you have achieved with Gary is a skill that will last a lifetime.

congratulations, good for you keeping on at it, as it's hard work when progress seems slow.

You could try the little books that come with tapes/cd's for in the car or bed, the pace may be a bit fast for him to keep up, but if he repeatedly listens you'll find he starts to pick out certain words in the text as he hears them.

Do you have any Kumon centres in Scotland ? they have a way of teaching English and maths that starts at a very early level, look them up on the internet, they may be able to him him as well.

Glad he's going to get a special treat for his hard work.

Well done to Gary for all his hard work ..... and well done to you too. He'll go far with that amount of patience and support at home and an understanding school to back you up.

That's really good news, Susan!

I'm hoping my little guy, who is seven, will at some point make that breakthrough too, as reading is fairly tortuous for him. :sweating:

Well done Gary
