Hi

I am doing a college course in Canine Care, training and management at Writtle College and am doing my assignments on whippets. I have been asked to do a assigment on breeding from a whippet bitch. I need to know what health checks to carry out on my bitch prior to mating? I have looked on the Kennel Club Accredited Breeders Scheme - Breed-Specific Requirements and Recommendations including Health Screening and nothing comes up for the whippet. I have also done some research on the internet and it has become apparent that whippets are very healthly dogs that do not have many inherited diseases, but I can not seem to find anything that actually tells me what test should be carried out. Would it be possible if anyone on this forum breeds whippets for them to let me know what health checks they have carried out on their bitches before mating.

Thank you for your help

Angela

Hi Angela,

There are no mandatory health tests for whippets; as you say they are a very healthy breed.

We (and a couple of other people that I am aware of) have made the decision to have our bitches and dogs for that matter, heart tested prior to breeding. With our last litter, both sire and dam had been heart tested clear.

The other thing, which more people are starting to test are eyes, with testing being readily available at shows up and down the country.

Hi Thank you for your reply, can you please tell me the tests you have done for the heart and eyes, so I can research these and put them in my assignment.

I have 3 greyhounds myself, but was not able to do my assignment on them as in our first assignment we had to write about purchasing a puppy etc and people do not generally purchase greyhound puppies as pets, so I had to choose another breed, so chose the whippet.

Thank you again for your help as I would like to put the right information in my assignment.

It would have been better if you posted this in the "SHOWING" section, that is where most of the breeders of show dogs go; some do not look through the other sections. Or if you are interested in racing dogs, then post in the racing section. Good luck with your project :luck:

Angela,

as a KC member I can help with this if you want to get in touch x
