hi all

been a while posting but had an app with the cardio specialist on thursday to get an ecg and very specific ultrasound on bailey and the guy was very good in describing what the problem really was , main aorta was very good but other valve not so , this is the one leaking and you could see clearly the thickening of the walls , so he said maybe 6 months was to be expected , but hope he is wrong obviously, and he said it would be good to try digoxin for a bit to help the cough as well , has anyone tried this med? and also what was the side effects as he mentioned vomiting and other stomach problems, also he said he sees a lot of heart problems in whippets which i was not aware of , i thought they were pretty good that way, anyway he is soldiering on and still going walks .

Sorry to hear about Bailey's heart problem and hope the medication helps him. I can't offer any advice I'm afraid, but hope others with experience of this may be able to help.

I'm sorry to hear Bailey is having these problems.

I don't have any advice, but hopefully the medication will help him with the minimum of side effects. Like you, I'm surprised to hear your vet says this problem affects a lot of whippets - I always thought they were pretty healthy little dogs.

Whippets are a very healthy breed, some lines can and do have heart problems which come to light as the dog ages. I don't know how old your boy is, but if he is a young dog and pedigree you should let his breeder know.

I hope the meds work for him, it's sad to see them poorly.

I am sorry to hear about Bailey's condition. At least he has seen a specalist and can recieve the correct treatment.

I am somewhat skeptical of regular vets (meaning not a cardiologist) diagnosing a sighthound with a murmur. Most vets are not used to listening to their hearts, which are slightly different from most other breeds, and sound different and with no hair or fat to muffle the sound. I have been told with numerous whippets over the years that the whippet has a murmur. If and when seen by a a specailist cardiologist no heart problem has been found. I do not think that there is a problem with the breed but agree that breeders should be told if a heart condition is diagnosed in a whippet that they have bred. It may be that more whippets with heart conditions are picked up on because any irregularity is easier to hear than in an overweight or heavy coated dog.

The OP is talking about specialist cardiologist. Yes, ordinary vets do misdiagnose heart murmurs, they also may miss real heart problem.
